Question, Is there any legal way to get a copy of vista home basic, or do I have to go option 2?

Thanks.

You cannot use the CDKEY of a Windows that came w/ a computer on any other computer but itsself - it is illegal. That being said I suggest if you can wait, wait a few months until Windows 7 comes out (Oct 22) and buy the Home Edition for $120 (I think). Or you can get Vista now and get a free upgrade to Windows 7 (all new purchases of Vista are eligible for free upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out).

There is at least one legal way that is even condoned by Microsoft itself in some of its published procedures, namely, borrow a Vista CD from a friend, relative, etc., and use it to install the OS on your HDD except that when it asks for your key, naturally you give it the one belonging to you and not your buddy, neighbor, etc. There is a little-known fact behind this logic, that all the CD's are identical and only the keys are unique. As far as I know, this is the only legal and free way to do what you want.

About 8 months ago I brought a new laptop, it had vista home basic pre-installed on it. I didn't like vista so I put xp on it.

Fast forward 8 months, and my brother has given me one of his computers he doesn't need anymore, minus a hard drive and operating system. So I thought I would stick my copy of vista on it. Untill I realized i didnt have a copy of vista on cd, as the laptop had had one of those backups preinstalled on it.

Problem, I have a computer and a product key for vista home basic, but no installation cd.

Question, Is there any legal way to get a copy of vista home basic, or do I have to go option 2?

Thanks.
