hi ebony,

you can combine hamachi + VNC to get full access to your sister's pc (including file transfer). as gvape said...hamachi only create virtual network. but hamachi will give you and your sister's pc static ip :) so every time you need to access your sister's pc no need to find her ip :)

but if you only want to help your sister fixing some pc problem (without transfer file) then logmein is enough. me myself use logmein and so far im satisfied with their performance

Read it Pwnana, thanks!

The quoted portions of your html do make LogMeIn very safe for tech support:-

LogMeIn Free Security

As
part of this commitment our datacenters and source code are continually
reviewed by independent, accredited third party audit firms to ensure
data that your information remains confidential.

SSL/TLS communications

The
communications protocol used by LogMeIn Free and Pro² is SSL/TLS
(OpenSSL). The same protocol is the standard for web-based commerce or
online banking. It provides authentication and protection against
eavesdropping, tampering and message forgery.

In addition to the email
address/password combination, users can elect to require additional
verification steps, such as entering one-time-use codes from a
pre-printed sheet or an email message.

Intrusion Resistance

Authenticating
with LogMeIn.com or (in case of a browser left unattended in the wrong
place at the wrong time) authenticating with the host can be subject to
brute force login attempts by unauthorized users. Both LogMeIn.com and
the host employ simple but efficient lockout mechanisms that only allow
a few incorrect logins before locking the account or the offending IP
address.

Auditing And Logging

LogMeIn.com
has granular auditing capabilities available under a user's account
security settings. These audit messages will notify users via email
when an important change (such as adding a new computer) or a
suspicious event (such as an incorrect login) occurs.

Furthermore, LogMeIn.com provides extensive reporting capabilities on past remote access sessions.

The
host keeps a detailed event log specific to LogMeIn. It also writes
major events (such as a remote access session starting or ending) into
the operating system event logs. The host can also be configured to
record remote access sessions into video files for later playback.

These quoted portions do set my mind at rest. Thanks

I believe the only risk would be if someone knew your account credentials, so that would be up to the users to keep it safe. Like Karen said, each computer has to be specifically linked to an account before it can be accessed by someone remotely, so you can control who has access.

Is there a vulnerability in using these software if you are the receiver of techsupport? That is you are exposed to someone who then can remotely see you? That techsupporter may be trustworthy. But can an entirely new third person (hacker) exploit you. If yes:-

Is there scope to define only if one techsupport person & only one machine can provide support to you? That way no other machine can play mischief.

That too only on certain aspects? Meaning some parts of your machine &/or certain drives &/or certain files etc can be write protected etc etc ?

Log Me In is great! I use it for tech support for my parent's computers. In this case, your sister would need to download and install the logmein server side software which will include setting up a username/password. By default, this software sets itself up to load when the computer is booted so that it will always be available. This is probably manageable by a computer novice, but it my case, I just installed it for my parents once when I visited.

Then you can create an account at LogMeIn and link her computer to it. After that, all you need to do is log into your logmein account, click on her computer to link to it and enter the username/password from when the server side software was installed. Then you will be able to see her complete desktop.

The only drawback to the free version is that you cannot transfer files. You do get the Pro version with file transfer for free for the first thirty days though.

Useful for gaming mostly, and not used for much else outside of business environments.
