Someday that old hard drive will die. So be ready for it. IMHO you should use it for backup, because it's probably slow too. If it dies you just chuck it and get something else for backup (good excuse for a new computer). If the new disk dies you have your stuff backed up.

Thumbs up! It is definitely better to use your old drive for backup and set it as the slave drive. It is also a good idea to do 2 backups, one on the old drive and another either on a flash drive (USB) or DVD/Blue Ray etc.

If you do get a new PC and the drive still works then the installation becomes a bit more tricky. Most newer PCs don't have connectors for PATA drives. Therefore you have to look elsewhere to install it. If you have a CD/DVD drive, and have a second connector for that drive, you should notice that that connector is the same for a PATA drive. You can set the drive to slave and connect it to the CD/DVD drive.

Sure it makes sense. But i would use the small one as primary drive with the operating system and install all the programs on the big drive. There are few programs that don´t allow to change the install path but they should fit on the 40GB drive.

If you don´t like the idea use the small drive for your temp directory and for the pagefile. This should speed up your computer a bit.

I am replacing the 40GB PATA/IDE drive on my Dell 2400 computer with a new 320GB hard drive to give me hopefully more capacity (for all the freebies I download from Giveaway of the Day) and hopefully allow my computer to run faster. Does it make sense to reuse the old 40GB drive as a second (slave) drive? Are there any precautions I should be aware of?
