There are 300 different kinds of Linux (called distros) although most of them are just flavors of half a dozen different main distros. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightweight_Linux_distribution for some good ones for your antique. Go to a Linux forum and ask what will run on your machine given its horsepower. Download a CD and try it. I think you'll like Puppy. It will even run normally from a CD. Bodhi is eye candy on low memory.

Well, for my main PC, Ubuntu may be out of the question. I review many programs that are only windows compatible, and I am very familiar with my windows programs that arent available on Linux.

find the "Ubuntu Software Center" icon, and there are 36,058 apps to check out, categorized by type, with some reviews. Stick to those for now, because they are all certified by the Ubuntu folks and they're not the usual freeware you get with Windows: full of toolbars and malware. Installation is one-click easy, and if you don't like something, uninstallation is just as easy and leaves no mess. (Rarely you'll need to add an outside repository, like Dropbox. Be careful! )

You've probably used Windows for a while, and the good news is you won't have to relearn everything all over again, but you will have to learn something. Go to the forums like linuxquestions.org or ubuntuforums.org and rerad all the Ubuntu documentation.

do you think an old pc running windows 98 could run the newest version of Ubuntu?

well i not only need itunes for music but also for the apps.....will it also do apps? If not, i did some research of a program called wine that can run windows apps on Ubuntu.

AFAIK, you can only transfer music and maybe video between Ubuntu and iDevices.

Wine does not run iTunes. Heck, Windows barely even runs iTunes!

This lil box (the old Dell) has been my primary computer since my Acer broke down, and Ubuntu definitely helped speed it up compared to the included Windows XP. With 1GB of RAM, it's worth the tradeoff of speed to compatibility. Besides, almost everything works just as well under Linux, from my experience.

I learned back in my Linux-craze days that Linux is fun (especially Ubuntu) but not practical for doing work. I mean yeah you can get your work done on Linux like you can on Windows but it is just a lot harder because of software compatibilities.

Everytime in the past that I've used Ubuntu, it contained pretty much everything I needed.....media player, office suite, browser and email, graphics tools, etc.

My question is, if I boot into Drive D and install WUBI/Ubuntu…can I direct it to install to Drive E as a program? I apologize if this is a profoundly ignorant question. I am not a geek.

I currently don't have a good computer to use, but I've heard Not Tetris 2 is pretty cool :P

For iTunes? Try Banshee (http://banshee.fm). I love it. If you have an iPod, you can even sync with it!
