<description><![CDATA[<p>steelers6, on second thought, dropbox is more like online backup, because those files need to remain in your dropbox folder in your computer(once you delete these files, all the files uploaded to the internet will also become deleted once it syncs). You can&#39;t store stuff "exclusively" online with dropbox.</p>
</p>
<p>Dropbox can also serve like an online flashdrive, once you link it to different computers. I first heard of this software from lifehacker, so they deserve some credit too.</p>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Hey all. I thought I&#39;d just check back &#38; probably see that no one had posted much of anything after I did, as is often the case in some forums--topics&#160;can&#160;run dry quickly.</p>
<p>Or, (Thank God dottech.org is not like others I&#39;ve recently visited) people at some forums&#160;are often wasting precious time by putting down the newbies for lack of experience, or are inanely&#160;attacking each other, instead of trying to help each other. But here it is different. I was pleasantly surprised at how much was posted so quickly by several people kind enough to share their knowledge, &#38; with so much helpful info. I learn so much here, &#38; it feels like a dignified, respectable forum.</p>
<p>Thanks to you all, &#38; of course, to Ashraf.</p>
<p>Take care. Al</p>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Thanks for all of the tips, I appreciate them, I just tried Drop box and that seems to be the easiest of all of them. Just drop it and be done. I checked out Adrive but they limit the downloads and it's advertising so I was concerned about the safety. Plus no auto Sync. I also tried Moxie or Mozy but it was like so many, you just don't get much. I think it will all work out. I've gotten a lot of grreat ideaa and appreciate it. I still encrypt my documents though, I just don't trust when things are out of my immidiate control.</p>
<p>Thanks, I will follow up with all of the good advice here. If i find something Great, I will be sure to post it back.</p>
<p>Thanks So much!</p>

<p>In case your still looking for something online, <a href="http://www.adrive.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.adrive.com/</a> is a great site. The free account (or accountS &#60;_&#60;) Give 50gb (each <img src='http://dottech.org/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt='<img src="http://dottech.org/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-wink.gif" title="Wink" alt="Wink" />' class='wp-smiley' /> ), and no upload size limit. Well I guess the limit is 50gb. However, its not particularly fast, though not slow either.</p>
<p>If you want to access your files easily from anywhere, <a href="http://icloud.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://icloud.com/</a> is good, but its only 3gb of storage. Its more ideal for documents and stuff, though as far as I know theres no upload size limit. </p>
<p>And if you really want fast all around, theres always <a href="http://megaupload.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://megaupload.com/</a>. Its not very secure beyond the fact that to find your file someone would need to already know the name. However, its got very fast uploads, REDICULOUSLY fast downloads (even for free accounts), an upload limit of 1gb, and 50gb (i think) of online storage.</p>
<p>As far as I know, mozy is the only free online storage with auto-backup.</p>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Thanks,I will look into it. I can't really afford to purchase anything right now with the holidays coming up.</p>
<p>I did find Gladinet that will sync to skydrive, but it is not very good, just out of beta.</p>
<p>I sure do hope that MS. and SkyDrive come out with something soon. It would be nice to have everything in one place while I'm on the road or if I just want to store for safe keeping. The other bad thing about Skydrive is they give you a bunch of apce but the upoad limit is only 500MB. </p>
<p>So, all of my big items can't go up there.</p>
<p>I'll check out the storage you speak of. Thanks for the help. I work with a company with thousands of employees and a lot of us travel and they restrict us from acccessing stuff a lot.</p>
<p>I did download SkyeDrive Explorer, but it won't let me copy and paste into it, but it looks like they are moving in that direction.</p>
<p>It's hard to tell what gets copied and what doesn't using the Glainet tool. Yoou would have to hand check each item. Looks like a new version of SkyeDrive explorer is out. I'll have to see what that is. </p>
<p>Thanks for the help. You all are so good with the hardware where I'm better with the software.</p>
<p>I'll check into it.</p>

I think this would be the best solution for many of the techies here as it is easily expanded without the need for expensive hardware.</p>

<p>I have no clue what you guys are talking about. But, I think I have a lot of information to figure it out. </p>
<p>My question is, is it expensive???? I don't want to pay more money or very little, then I'll have my friends so, come over and show me how to hook the darn thing up. Because I would probably blow up my house.</p>
<p>I'm sorry, I appreciate the help, I am just overwhelmed with 411. But that's not too hard with me sometimes. I'm a geek but not a major geek in a good way of course.</p>
<p>That's why I like hanging out with you all. I am in the middle. </p>
<p>Thanks for all of the help, I'm going to copy it and give it to the kid to do. Just let me know how much it costs and if it is safe.</p>
<p>Thanks you guys are great.</p>

&#124; &#124; &#124; &#124;<br />
&#124; Desktop 1 &#124; &#124;<br />

&#124; etc ...<br />
&#124;<br />
Linksys router. firmware flashed to dd-wrt<br />
&#124; &#124; DD-WRT allows you to set up a VPN server via <br />
&#124; &#124; the router configuration pages. You can create<br />
&#124; &#124; usernames/passwds to access the VPN.<br />
&#124; &#124;<br />
&#124; other ports for other stuff<br />
&#124;<br />
Buffalo Linkstation Duo 2TB NAS<br />
     has a set of configuration pages<br />
where you can create root folders and who has<br />
     read/write permissions to them<br />
you can also enable web access, but I do not <br />
     have it enabled**</p>
<p>*port forwarding set up to forward VPN traffic <br />
 to the linksys router</p>
<p>**if you enable web access, you can cut out the <br />
linksys router but then you have to set up port <br />
forwarding thru your regular router and open up <br />
port 9000 to the outside world</p>
<p>--------------------------------------------------<br />
access from home - Buffalo Linkstation just appears like any other computer in Network Places, and you can map a drive to it, etc.</p>
<p>access away from home - once you have connected to the VPN, it is just like you are on your home network and you can see any resources that you would be able to see at home</p>
<p>access away from home without VPN - enable webaccess. you get an account at <a href="http://www.buffalonas.com" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.buffalonas.com</a> (Buffalo customers only) and when you log into it, you get a set of web pages that shows the contents of your drive and you can download a doc, play music, movies, etc. This is why you must have a specific port open.</p>
<p>----------------------------------------------<br />
Like I said above, a similar setup should work with other NAS devices. This is just what I have. Some NAS devices come with empty drive bays and you supply your own harddrives and some, like mine, come with the drives already installed.</p>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Sorry about any confusion, but Buffalo is the name of a company that makes NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices. There are a bunch of them. Even Seagate and WD have their own flavors of NAS devices. But essentially a NAS is an external harddrive that has some basic networking features built in. Usually, they have some sort of small motherboard and run a linux variant. Any NAS device will probably do what I'm talking about. And you do use your current internet provider. This whole setup is something that you do in your house.</p>
<p>I'll post something later with more details on my configuration.</p>
<p>And I know what you mean about working for the Government. <img src="http://dottech.org/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-wink.gif" title="Wink" alt="Wink" /> I'm just a contractor, but our offices are no cell phones, ipods, iphones, cameras, etc. In addition, all the PCs have USB access turned off. So no thumb drives.</p>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Another option is to get a backup drive that is network accessible. I have a Buffalo Linkstation Duo 2TB. I have it in RAID 1, so I only really have 1TB of storage.</p>
<p>You can access all of your stuff through a web portal that you can set up through Buffalo. You do then have to allow a port through your home router though. But you can set up different users and folders and folder access. (there's some sort of light-weight linux running on the linkstation - some people even hack into them and install custom linux apps, but I didn't want to void my warranty).</p>
<p>I have lots of music and photos on it and I also store my laptop backups there.</p>
<p>Or you can do what I did and also get a cheap linksys ddwrt router that you can flash custom firmware (just google ddwrt) on that enables you to set up a VPN server on the router. Then when you are on the road, you can set up a VPN network connection on your PC (and I can also do it from my iPhone), and once you've logged into the VPN it is like being on your own home network and you can access whatever you like.</p>
