I found a thread with more info and people have gotten replies from Kingsoft that it really is freeware. Apparently there is a bug in how it handles licensing, which Kingsoft's R&D will have to fix:

"Kingsoft Office Suite Free 2012 is a free version. We have forwarded the license problem to the related R&D department."

LMAO at the Mr. Boss comment.

That said, I really do hope it is freeware. I would like to post about it.

I downloaded the installer from here:

As its shown in the picture you would have to purchase new serial number to continue to use all functions (editing functions,... are disabled in viewer mode) of Kingsoft Office Suite Free 2012 after 1 year period.

Sure the splash screen shows free and on the home page is a big mark that KSO 2012 is freeware but at the moment this is not true. Maybe Kingsoft will change this in the future. I don't know. Let's hope so.

FYI, Kingsoft office 2012 Free is really not a freeware but it's actually a 1 year fully functional trial version.

The license key is embedded in the installer.

Oh? Could it be for logistic purposes they have it as a 1 year trial right now but in reality will continue to "renew" the license to make it freeware? Their website sure makes it sound like it is freeware.
