If you play PC games then you have probably heard of Valve. They are the creators of many great games along with Steam, a way of purchasing and downloading PC games. Yesterday (I think), Steam announced that they were offering the game Alien Swarm for free. To get this game for free you need Steam, get it at http://store.steampowered.com, and at least 2GB of hard drive space. The link to the game site is: http://store.steampowered.com/app/630/. Since this is a Valve product, it includes the source SDK. Laugh

I downloaded this yesterday. Still need to play it though… my friend keeps asking me to. I told him to write a review on Alien Swarm on dotTech Laugh.

What type of game is it?

I like play sort of match games without timers.

Is this one of those “kill” all the aliens?

When post about a game, it would be nice to have a brief description of the type of game it is, just like with the SW freebies.

I forgot to say. I haven't posted in a while. Anyway, here's the description:

Alien Swarm is a game and Source SDK release from a group of talented designers at Valve who were hired from the Mod community. Available free of charge, the game thrusts players into an epic bug hunt featuring a unique blend of co-op play and squad-level tactics. With your friends, form a squad of four distinct IAF Marine classes. Plan your attack using an unlockable arsenal of weapons with countless loadout configurations against a wide variety of aliens. Blaze your way through an overrun, off-world colony, eradicating the alien infestation in environments ranging from the icy planet's surface, to a subterranean lava-flooded mining facility. Along with the game get the complete code base for Alien Swarm that features updates to the Source engine as well as the SDK. Alien Swarm adds 3rd person camera, depth of field, improved dynamic shadows and a wide variety of gameplay additions to the Source engine.

  • Tactical, 4 player co-op action game with a top-down perspective
  • Complete game code and mod tools
  • Unlock persitent items by gaining levels
  • Over 40 weapons and equipment with countless loadout configurations
  • 4 unique classes and 8 unique characters
  • Matchmaking, Steam Cloud, Steam Stats
  • 64 achievements
  • Tile-based map generation tool
  • Powered by Source and Steam

Since I haven't played it yet, I can't say how good it is. It looks good though.

Thanks Casey

I found this info also.

“Alien Swarm is a classic arcade-style shoot-em-up. It can be played as a single player game but the most users will choose to operate in multi-player teams of up to four players.”

YouTube also has a video of it, pretty cool graphics and sound. Neat if you are into the fight games.

Ashraf, please make a day where 4 of us can have a “Alien Swarm Party”.

That will be exciting! Laugh Look around you; a lot of us are interested about this “free game”, so why not have a day where we all do co-op to trash some aliens?

I wonder if anyone realized, but doesn't this kind of look like “Left 4 Dead”?

@Lascannon

That sounds like fun. We should make a dotTech Steam group that is open to all dotTechies. I just checked and both dotTech and dotTechies are available as names for groups. BTW, isn't L4D first person while this game is third person? I see the resemblance though

I'm going to throw this idea out there: What if dotTech did a partnership with Valve or some other company to give away a free game? That would be awesome to us gamers out here.Laugh

It depends though, I just remembered something, but I don't think I'll get into that matter.

But heck, I don't eve think many of us even have the time to play games… or are even interested to play 'em.

It looks cool, but I won't be convinced without a review.  Also, will it run well in wine?

Well, it probably will, but more slowly than if it were on Windows.  I may try it later.

Wine is simply an open source implementation of some Windows core libraries.  It also is able to execute .exe and .msi files.  Basically, it allows you to install and run most Windows programs on Mac, Linux, BSD, and most other Unix systems.

Anyways… Ashraf, you haven't decided if you want to create a group or make any events on Dot.Tech to play co-op on Alien Swarm…
