Yes, for the most part that is all it is. However, the entire development process is heavily influenced by the community and, for a large part, even performed by the community. Ubuntu does not do this. They have a developer-developed roadmap. So the whole OS and all its features are molded by what the users want instead of what the devs think they want. It also has a better package manager and is designed to handle media better (built-in codecs). And yes, it does look much better then Ubuntu.

I never really paid much attention to Acer computers. I had never heard much of them and their computers really did not look that special.

Actually now I have limited how many links users can put in a post, so now spam will be a lot shorter .

That said, enough off-topic - sorry OP!

Yes it had a 1 year Manu. Warranty which resets to a brand new 6-month warranty after every repair.

I mean their last model, since this happened they have moved on to a brand new model (which looks pretty slick). Im kind of hoping to get a refund, since what I payed for back then will get me a better laptop now (*shifty eyes*).

Hey thanks locutus. He doesn't use the netbook edition but I am sure some of these things will be helpful for him. Especially how to run Windows programs from Wine. I have never had a linux system so it is good for me to have the info in case I ever switch. A free OS is a big deal. If it is good.

I got an HP laptop, and I loved it, except now I hate it. The fan was broken and I sent it in for repair several times with no luck, so they replaced the whole thing for free (A+ service) But this one is also broken. SO I don't hate HP, I just hate their last generation of laptops. And this could have just been me. It surprisingly hard to get a quality laptop nowadays, though.

On topic: I personally have never had an Acer. But it sounds like that is a good thing. It is surprising that such a mainstream name brand is rated so low my many people. Of course I guess the poll probably just included mainstream brands. I use an Asus netbook and it works great. No real problems with heat or anything. And no complaints about the price either, got it for free! Actually the friend I mention below does have an Acer. Will have to ask him how it works.

Not totally off topic:) Wow Locutus, it seems like most of the visitors to your site are from Dottech. I actually looked to see about hints on Linux, a friend just switched to it, but couldn't see any posts on the topic immediately. Will probably peruse more later. Do you have any quick hints I could give him as a new user switching from Windows? Or even what he should download that he will probably use often. He is mostly going to be using it for business. He uses an Acer.
