Don't fret, Xmarks does NOT look like disappearing anytime soon. See <http://blog.xmarks.com/> and note the following.

QUOTE @ November 4, 2010

"we’re in the final stages of completing a sale of Xmarks to a new
owner who is 100% committed to keep our great browser sync service
running smoothly.
The Xmarks service will evolve to have both a free component and a
premium component – we’ll share all the details once the deal is done."

END QUOTE

For now, I will continue to use Xmarks and Linkman Pro as a prudent safety measure.

Suggest using any alternative of your liking to do something similar. Back-ups always are good to have

I used two systems - Xmarks and Homepage startup because they were both cross platform and offered different advantages and both were free.

Homepage startup just disapeared without warning and now Xmarks is going as well.

To protect my current bookmarks I have switched to the Firefox imbedded backup, but for cross platform I use a visual bookmark service.

There are dozens of free visual bookmark services that are free like speedtie.net

I went with a free service (Evernote.com) and a payservice ( tidyfavorites.com). Both have apps for online storage as well as apps for local storage so I get both the convienece of accessing my bookmarks and other links from anywhere as well as the security of having them on my home computer if the services go out of business.

There are several good alternatives which Xmarks is kind enough to list .. thanks for the feedback jumbi & Locutus. I just like the cross platform / browser cloud solution which works well for me. For all its power Linkman Pro is great but the simple, though not flawless, Xmarks service is very useful for me between several computers at home and work without having to install anything or keep a flash dive with me. If I could confine myself to one primary browser then the alternatives suggested by Xmarks would be perfect but different browsers work better for different uses so I use three. There is more information here:

Google Chrome has one too. The thing is none of them are cross-platform (though I'm sure if you worked hard enough you could port Firefox's).

It isn't, from what I've heard, so much of "we decided you should pay", it's a "we just can't afford to run this service any more".

thats the problem with private "free" utilities...

You can never know when they decide to become commercial.

Of course Xmarks have offered a lot of functionalities and may be necessary to many people, especially for syncing to different browsers and using different bookmarks profiles. So Karl's post is useful.

Personally I stopped using it (after 2+ years) when I discovered I was losing bookmarks all the time due to sync errors... And when I reported that somewhere here, someone else also confirmed it :-)

Been using mozillas official add on "sync" tool, right after it became available and has been reliable so far.

Of course, it's free and due to browsers competition (Opera has a similar tool embedded), 99% it will not go commercial through any private company.

I'm sure many of you have heard about Xmarks shutting down on January 10th.. If you are a user of the best cross browser / computer bookmark sync service available and you would like to continue with this service you have until October 15th to pledge $10 if you are willing to pay for this service. For those of you willing to take the pledge please spread the word on any appropriate forums / means available. I think they need 100,000 people to pledge (no money / credit card to pledge) and they are just over 20,000 right now so if you're interested now

is the time to pledge and spread the word.

Thanks for your support!
