I am looking to purchase a new Android device and have certain criteria in mind.  I know of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Nexus but want to hear about other options too.  My criteria are as follows:

1. It must be rootable

2. It must have a microSD Card slot

3. Unlockable bootloader (not absolute though it makes tweaking the device so much easier)

I have been using a Motorola Droid X2 and have not been that happy though CM7 has made it much more usable than stock.  I have never been able to unlock the bootloader hence looking for a new phone.  I am especially interested in HTC options but it seems the One X series is unavailable for Verizon.  Please share your thoughts on this as I really would like to find something soon; I would also like to hear your thoughts on the Samsung devices as I have not ruled them out.  Thanks.

For Android on Verizon, Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Nexus are pretty much your best options. Between those two I’d definitely recommend the S3 over the GN simply because the GN is almost a year old and a new Nexus will likely come out by December which will make you feel like shit, lmao. Keep in mind, though, I believe Verizon’s S3 has a locked bootloader although I think I’ve read somewhere the bootloader has been unlocked. There is also an insanely expensive S3 Developer Edition that comes with an unlocked bootloader.

That said, out of Verizon’s current line the only other options I can see are the Droid RAZR MAXX and Droid Incredible 4G LTE. The MAXX is notable for its huge battery and excellent battery life; however it is “last year’s model” and is due for a refresh soon. Incredible 4G LTE is an updated version of HTC’s excellent Droid Incredible line. I believe a review by Engadget put the device in a very favorable light although it has a “small” 4 inch screen.

I’m not sure about the Droid RAZR MAXX and Droid Incredible when it comes to your three requirements but they are good devices.

Hope that helps! Let us know what you decide.

Come to think of it, I don’t think the Galaxy Nexus has a microSD slot.

Hi Ashraf.  Thanks for the info and thoughts.  A quick check confirms the S3 has a microSD slot as well as 2GB of RAM.  I know the Nexus does not.  The other phone I had been considering was the Droid RAZR MAXX as mentioned though I know the new version is coming in October if rumors are correct.  I had been interested in finding an HTC phone because of their tool for unlocking the bootloader but with no One X for Verizon I am not so sure.  I will write back more as I come to a decision.  I might just hold out another month or two before deciding.

You are welcome! Glad I could be of help.

For what it is worth, I hear Moto and Verizon have an unveiling in early October. That probably is the MAXX.

It looks like Motorola devices are out.  They install a root checker on all ICS or newer devices.  Read more at:

I don’t know about you but this is the last straw pushing me away from Motorola devices.  Too bad as the MAXX looks like a decent device with good battery life.

Yes they are out. http://dottech.org/android/78837/motorola-announces-droid-razr-m-droid-razr-hd-and-droid-razr-maxx-hd/

Interesting about the root checker. Can’t blame Moto though — Verizon is one pushing for it. Unless you are Apple, you do carrier bidding.
