Be sure to read the rebate stuff to make sure you are eligible and note that I think those are different products. One is Internet Security and the other is Total Security.

I am not sure why you were having problems with Kaspersky 2013 but my Kaspersky Pure is a different product anyway. One of the requirements for 2013 is to have Internet Explorer 8 installed but who knows what the reason for your problem was. Good Luck.

(I guess I'm not used to monitoring and all those pop ups to confirm just got annoying so I installed the trial version of Bitdefender and it seems to be working nicely. 

 

It seems to be getting high marks, so hopefully I made a good choice. I did like Kaspersky, but 2013 just wouldn't work on my computer (it wouldn't load after a restart and the updates did not download and it was just a big mess for me)...

<rant>After my last run-in with Norton, I still will never ever use it!  Long story short, I bought a new Lenovo desktop with Win 7 Pro recently.  Experienced problems right from the initial set up, within 2 weeks it wouldn't load the OS  It went back to my tech guy (whom I purchased it from.)  He got it working perfectly, he removed Norton, or so he thought, and also complained about how difficult it was to get rid of.  When I got it back, it looked like it was gone.  BUT I found that even though Norton hadn't been installed there was a plug-in added to Firefox.  My tech did not install FF, I installed it after getting the pc back and since Norton was not installed, and the installation exe had been removed, how the heck did that happen? 

As mentioned previously, things do get installed from Norton during the initial setup of a pc (without permission) and are hard to find.  </rant>

Right now I am using Avast free and NIS 2010 smokes Avast Free in performing a full system scan in speed and in the use of system resources.  I have a 500 gb HD and about 300 GBs of used space.  

 As for Norton being hard to remove, it isn't as difficult as it use to be.

 

As for firewall, i am using Emisoft Online Armor Free.   EOA is really simple to use and seems to do the trick.  Upon reading the posts above, I may check out that Agnitum Outpost Firewall.

 

If you're going free software, stick with Avast for AV and Emisoft Online Armor or Agnitum Outpost for firewall.

 

If you go for a paid internet security suite, use recent versions of NIS,  I have looked at McAfee and KAspersky through friends and they didnt impres me.   They also have slower scan speeds and take up more system resources to do so.

 

Some Extras to use would be MalwareBytes, SpywareBlaster, and OpenDNS.  Basically, click the link below

When you install, just make sure you install the free version, not the pro version which is just a trial, otherwise you will be plagued with notices about the trial expiring.

@Jyo You may be right about Norton but because of its past history I'm highly suspicious.  I would never install it on my pc for 2 reasons, one because I consider it to be as bad as a virus, two because it is a b*tch to get rid of (always something left over) and another reason I abhor Norton is that it always comes bundled with new PCs, laptops etc. and even if you don't install it, and try to delete the installation exe, there will still be something left on the computer (as something does get installed during the initial setup.)

I am stuck on dial-up and if I got too far behind on the updates, they were nearly impossible to complete. And years after uninstalling I would still find traces of Norton on my system. I don't remember if I had any other issues with it or not.

As for free alternatives I prefer Avira to Avast. I have three computers and one has Kaspersky, another Avira, and the third has Avast. I will eventually put Kaspersky on the Avira computer, but I have not used the Avast computer in a year or so, so I won't even bother turning it on. Avast is pretty nice but Avira is by far the best when it comes to ease of updates for slow internet users, which I know doesn't matter to most. What I don't like about Avira is that it is such a nag and apparently does not understand what "Always Ignore" means.

I too recommend WinPatrol and Malwarebytes. WinPatrol is the first thing I install on a new computer. It is great at preventing stuff from installing in the first place and the easiest way to prevent 1000 programs from autostarting with windows and stopping all of those silent update programs from running in the background.

My opinion about Norton is not just my own, and from many others on the 'net, but also from pc gurus/technicians etc.  One of the first things many technicians do when fixing pcs for customers is to get rid of Norton (which BTW is not an easy task) and install free AV/Firewall programs.  (with the customer's approval of course)

I have been using Avast since 2002, and Agnitum Outpost Firewall since the late 90's.  Yes I have tried others from time to time, but always gone back to my main choices for protection.  I also use Malwarebytes, and WinPatrol Plus in my arsenal for protection.

I'm willing to try other SW for protection but up to this point I haven't found anything that is better than what I use, or even comes close.

However, don't just take my word on this also check out Ashraf's article

Yes the article is old, but still holds true.  Maybe Ashraf could do an update on it, but I highly doubt it would change much.

And I wouldn't trust CNET's opinion on antivirus in any case. I mean, just look at the way they deal with downloads (making you download their download manager to install software) and also if you read their articles, you get the sense that they might be biased at times. They seem, at least to me, like one of those companies whose focus is mainly on money. And we all know how money can affect things...e.g. ehhem test results.
