Notice, I said better protection, not better detection. http://av-test.org/ might have other things to say too. I realize Im still wrong, of course. >_>

That's exactly what the companies selling the AVs want everyone to believe.

A little reading on dotTech and any other tech related sites will show otherwise however.

Paid versions may give a couple extra features that free versions don't, but they're just that, extra features, not necessary features.

Yet in the end, it all comes down to what each individual believes is the case. So anyone that thinks they have to pay for an AV to get the best protection, pay for it and be happy. And everyone else, you be happy too.

For me, I spent the money on other things. Why pay when you can get the same thing or better for free.

I've always used free AVs, and I've never been infected. This includes my previous computer, which was used by a number of people going to all types of sites.

DOnt we all, but its a fact that paid AVs give better protection, and Im not the one paying for my AV XD. Right now I use Norton 360, which is great protection, but kind of annoying to work with. Ive tried the beta of the newest, and its REALLY obnoxious. And Kapersky wont let me use SystemCare OR Comodo firewall, so thats outta the question. Avira is great protection, but has almost NO features. Basically I want to find another AV before the new Norton...

Ive never heard of it before, but in av-test's (if you dont know they command quite a bit of respect in av testing) recent tests (http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/collection/1986/top_paid_antivirus_2010.html), G-Data (http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/collection/1986/top_paid_antivirus_2010.html) came out on top. Usually the top 10 is divided among the usual contenders (Symantec, Kapersky, Bitdefender, Avira, etc.) but this rookie seems to have beaten them all. Is it just me, or has anyone else heard of this?

Just to clarify, I know they've been around awhile from there site, but Ive never heard of it or seen it in the top 10 before.
