But Norton also offers Gamer and Netbook editions, which are extremely light.

That's probably why intel bought McAfee. Like I said, they've been mediocre as of late, but are still a pretty respectable name. So intel might have bought them because they were a perfect balance of cheap and brand.

Really? The Norton that comes with Comcast is bloated and slow. And so was the McAfee before it.

I agree with Pwnana. There are quite a few terrific "big name" security software, norton kaspersky nod32 avira etc. It is worth noting though many kaspersky users are reporting that kaspersky is turning into bloatware.

What are you talking about? Those big name "paid av" are the exact opposite of everything you just said, and their free counterparts are too. McAfee recenly has been pretty mediocre as far as AV goes.

I like intAfee, cuz it sounds like in-taffee.

i agree.. maybe intel will raise the standards for mcafee.. or else mcafee will ruin intel's reputation nad people will buy AMD.. lol

but i have a question.. we all know that all hte "paid AV" (im talking about those which have sucky names.. ie. norton and mcafee) they basically suck.. their horrible.. lowest finding rate, slows down pc, RAM, memory hog, too much HD space, ugly layout/ UI, poor removal, fake positives, etc.

but why would intel want to invest in such a horrible AV.. many people buy it cuzits on their computers preloaded with a trial, but maybe they want ot improve it..

PS i hope intel comes out with a better name than mcafee... something sexy and cool and techy (all in one) which will shape thier AV which will be also an all in one. lol!

Iunno. Originally when i read about it i was excited. But after thinking about it, it sounds like it will just remove the choice from the consumer if they want to have protection installed. In other words, another age of bloatware.

I suppose it really depends on how they implement. I am going to reserve judgement until more. details are available but i am not holding my breath

Yea, so it would probably work like hardware-accelerated virtualization. The technology is there, but you need virtualization programs to take advantage of it

I agree. The most likely is some sort of hardware-based protection. Which would greatly speed it up. But harder to update with new malware info, so you'll probably still need some sort of software-based anti-malware program.

I could see some good coming out of this. Maybe hardware-based protection? Free antivirus for intel users? (Probably not, seeing as they own like 80% of the market).

I hope Intel can improve on what used to be a good company. Running 6 pc's with 2 packages of McAfee 3 user & they could not keep the registrations separate. Meaning, one of the 3 user apps expired & I installed a new retail box 3 user of their "Total Protection" suite - they used the existing expiration date for the new install which plain ole cheated me out of 6 months of updares & support for the new install.

I called to corrrect this and got someone who could barely speak english, and said they used the expiration date on file. I complained further and ask don't you keep a record of the serial codes? Still no reasonable answer and just 6 months active subscription.

Intel....I hope you are reading this.....
