Just connected to say I might be a while… I was cleaning my fan, and when I booted my computer up… now I can't access anything on my HDD. Including all Linux ISOs I've downloaded. I can boot off an Ubuntu live CD but I can't seem to access wifi. My other computer is too old to be useful as is, so (kind of ironically) I need to find a nice lightweight distro before doing any work on it.

Also, does anyone know how to deal with an Input/Output error? Replacing the HDD will be rough.

EDIT: well I've managed to connect the Ubuntu live CD to the internet thru ethernet. I'm trying to use the update manager to download a WiFi driver so I can get a working live computer (but I won't be able to turn off the computer).

Well, I guess we can all look forward to another great article then!

You certainly have become one of the most resourceful and interesting members of dotTech in recent months, Locutus. In some ways, I feel tempted to go as far as saying you've even stolen the show from Ashraf - but I worry what he'd think of that suggestion. In any case, it's great to see.

I did the puppy Linux it loaded up fine from the C/D ran pretty decent. This laptop was bought 6 years ago . it was meant to be in the truck just to do small task. it's beat but thought of tossing it out was creepy to me because it still ran. My thought was to toss a linux base into it and keep it in the garage with a data base on the cars trucks tracktor skimachines and lawn stuff, I'm going to have a look at a few more distros..

Your laptop seems to have very limited resources, especially the ram. The live CD (I've read) uses more resources than an actual installation. So the best road is to install Linux rather than run from CD. I've no idea the best linux. Many say that Puppy Linux is good on older hardware. You could probably quadruple your ram for about twenty bucks. I'd do that before installing a new OS. PC Linux minimum for ram is 256 MB. What's the processor speed in MHz or GHz? What type of video card or onboard graphics?
