1) How about the most efficient free battery saver app, if you think they work. Or if you don't, best realistic phone configuration to maximize battery life while being productive.

 

2) The best free text/multimedia app. One thing in particular I wanted to see your opinion on, besides the look and ease of use of the app, is security. For example, I use Go SMS and just recently found out that when I send picture messages it saves them somewhere and sends the link to that .jpg, so anybody could potentially view it. I don't like that at all. Updated version allows for regular picture embedding.

 

3) Other miscellaneous ideas include best free scanner app (picture to pdf), best free stock market app, and best quick reboot app. Those are the only ones I can think of right now.

We don't use smartphones so haven't encountered Android before. However, it seems we're by no means alone in the shift towards smaller mobile computers a la the Apple iPad. We wouldn't have an Apple product because of all the restrictions and the iTunes farce. And though the iPad is undoubtedly a good product, we're now amongst those who've gone the Android route instead -- specifically, with the new Asus Transformer, which we've just ordered here in the UK and which comes complete with separate keyboard and dock so that the unit serves either as a tablet or, when clam-shelled together, is a netbook killer. The UK price for the unit (10.2" tablet+keyboard dock with extra battery) is less than the iPad 2 in the UK and £ for £ out-scores Apple's offering pretty comprehensively.

Like Motorola's Xoom and other tablets now hitting Apple's market sector, the Asus runs the latest version of Android Honeycomb (v 3.1). Likely, Google will keep updating Honeycomb as time goes by. Also likely, more and more apps will appear.

So. . . Android is now fast becoming the OS of choice for the new tablets. And to judge from one of the fastest-growing user forums on the Internet at the moment (the one set up by Asus eeePad / eePad Transformer owners only a couple of months ago) it's pretty clear that Android no longer merely equals phone.

If dot.tech can have a look at Honeycomb tablet computing some time, I'm guessing there'd be a growing number of folks out there who'd appreciate it!
