The same Secunia scan that found the problem with FF also found the same problem with another video converter (SnowFox - which I got through a Valentine's Day giveway found by Ozzie). The problem was a video codec that was end-of-life which is released under GNU, so presumably all the developers needed to do was swap out the codec for a newer one and release the update.

I emailed both FF and SnowFox (on Fri 2/19 around 9pm).

I got a reply from SnowFox tech support on Mon 2/22 that they were looking into it. And an email today that they had fixed the problem and their website had a new version up for download.

Now, I haven't downloaded the update yet since I'm at work, but that's GOOD customer service. I haven't heard back from FF yet (and Ashrad contacted them as well).

I extrapolate that the way things are going the OS "Add Remove Programs" itself will do a thorough job of removal one day.

Even when I cock a snook at Win7 I am sure that the guys at Microsoft HQ are working hard to improve various things in that OS & in successors of Win7. Presently Vista & Win7 have improved "garbage cleaning technology" versus WinXP. Unfortunately GC as it stands today is somewhat limited in what it has to offer. It resets Memory & gives unused portion back to the OS both when certain functionalities of the app are no longer getting used in a given computing session. That is it cleans up after itself even if the apps developer does not.

They should extend GC capabilities further so that it also removes all related hard disk files & registry files when an app gets uninstalled. Give it time. I am sure those smart guys will deliver this too........eventually!

I found the Secunia Adobe problem happened when I used Adobe to update Adobe. Adobe does not overwrite the new sys file properly by itself. Adobe has some kink even though it says updated & has a very corporate looking updater. This habit of Adobe does not affect Adobe's functionality but it annoys Secunia. When I did not have Secunia I did not even notice this anomaly. When I got Secunia I got aware of this anomaly.

Secunia allows one to download & instal to the prescribed filepath. The new sys file is not given a new version number. If the new file is overwritten correctly over its older avatar this problem disappears. I was drawn to this peculiar kink in Secunia by a reputed writer. My gut told me (like it told you) that it is logically impossible for Secunia to blooper on this & that there must be another explanation to fit the facts. Since then I personally overwrite the new sys file in the correct path & folder & it works.

I had even sent an email to the Revo guys asking if Revo Uninstaller 1.85 removes all files & registry files of an uninstalled app. I did that "tongue in cheek" just to study their response. Revo guys replied "yes". Actually Revo 1.85 doesn't. If however you compare Pro with 1.85 Pro says even unremoved files of removed programs are removed. That was why I asked Revo in the first place. Therefore Revo does not remove everything as it claims.

I've had the intermittent problem with Secunia reporting out-of-date Adobe Flash. In fact, I just had this problem. It was reporting that /windows/system32/Macromedia/Flash/Flash10d.ocx (i.e., the ActiveX version). Since I rarely use IE, I just used Revo to uninstall the ActiveX version and leave the plugin alone (this was after I supposedly updated both). But Secunia was still reporting that it was a problem.

I finally did a search on my /Windows directory and it found the offending file in /SysWOW64/Macromedia/Flash/Flash10d.ocx and I just deleted it. That made Secunia happy.

So here are a couple of issues:
1) with Secunia reporting the file location incorrectly (even though it picked it up once I deleted it). This is annoying but minor.
2) with ADOBE -- WHEN RUNNING THE UNINSTALLER DOESN'T REMOVE CRAP

Thanks MikeR! Nice to see you. I had missed you. Perhaps you were in the forums but on a "not-yet-logged-in-mode

Now I too will use iWisoft Free Video Converter. Incidentally I remember Ashraf saying in one of his reviews & when FormatFactory (was not end-of-life) that while he (Ashraf) would not use FF for muxing & demuxing a video he(Ashraf) would use FF for converting between formats - precisely because even after the video conversion the original config of the video (including video height & width is retained).

Now that FF has gone to the nether world (God rest its soul ) I suppose Ashraf reserved all those good comments of FF & has transferred them as it were to iWisoft Free Video Converter instead

Ramesh: really helpful posts from you -- yet again! Thanks.

Re FormatFactory: since switching over to iWisoft Free Video Converter, I've not run into the problems that -- for reasons unknown -- affected many of my previously routine FF tasks.

(I can't, for example, understand why, having worked so dependably for so long, FF's editing facility repeatedly failed to deliver what it promised.)

iWisoft has proved to be outstanding as both a converter and an editor -- in fact, I've compared iWisoft with 'professional' editors and iWisoft's has been considerably quicker and easier to manage (once you get used to a slight quirkiness when setting edit points: there's no need to insert the colon between mins and seconds because the software does so automatically -- I was stupid enough to keep doing it myself and then lamenting the time spent in having to re-key my chosen parameters. Ah, well!)

One weakness about Secunia relates to Adobe updations. Sometimes when you update Adobe Reader or Adobe Flash Player even though you've updated to the latest version it tells you that you haven't. This is one irritant though not a dealbreaker for me.

It irritates because any dottechie would tell you that while on the one hand Adobe apps account for a huge proportion of internet traffic (60% or 85% or some such thing) the irony is that Adobe is also responsible for (85% or 60% or whatever %) of security holes. Adobe's level of prevalence on the internet & its contribution to "hole"-iness in terms of percentage may not be directly correlated. I also do not remember the exact percentages.

The point is, this is one of Secunia's area for improvement. Perhaps Secunia is also working on it.

I'd like to share a few dimensions about Secunia Personal Inspector 1.5.0.0 because dottechies might find them useful always:-

1) This app categorizes an app along various parameters - is it having a security hole, how serious is that hole in terms of hacking, is there a patch for that hole or is there not a patch available & finally is an app end-of-life

2) Perceptively Secunia Personal Inspector 1.5.0.0 also tells you that if an app is "end of life" does it have a security hole & if it does have a hole is that hole so large aka serious that it merits uninstallation

3) In the world of apps I've rarely seen an app which is as bright as it is honest - Secunia Personal Inspector 1.5.0.0 is one. The latest version is Secunia Personal Inspector 1.5.0.1. I chose not to update to 1.5.0.1. because Secunia itself mentioned on cnet that 1.5.0.1. was "only a distribution update" (new language added etc etc) but not a "feature update". In other words this app has the intellect & honesty to be self-critical. This personality trait has in fact earned it large respect & a good brandloyal user base too

There is only one app reviewer I know who is "intelligent & honest". I give you only 3 guesses to spot that reviewer:-

a)Ashraf

b)Ashraf

c)Ashraf

I've never seen an app "Ashrafise" itself before! Secunia is one such app!

On a serious note therefore while it is definitely desirable to "not be end-of-life" & to be also "hole-less in terms of security" the two are not necessarily always correlated.

Therefore one can be quick about leaving one boat & quickly jumping on to another but one need not be blazingly fast in order to do so.

Of course the user decides how "fast" is "fast" YMMV

This in no way detracts from Karen's excellent advice nor Ashraf's useful tip for the interim period
