That aside, let me get this straight.  So this little box is basically a receiver for the onlive network, where the game is actually powered by the server and streamed to your box.  That must some impressive computer farms they've got! Considering that even the best computer you can afford today could probably handle only 1 of these 3rd-gen games at a time, that would mean logically one computer per customer.  But thats just impractical.

Many people's internet speeds just aren't up to par to do this sort of thing. Sytems similar to this will likely start to become common as it becomes common to have an internet speed of 10 - 15 Mbps (I only have 1 Mbps, and most everyone else I know doesn't have above 6 Mbps).

Surprisingly, this rig has been around for a while. However, from what I've heard, the lag between clicks because of the internet barrier could be a major problem. But I really like the concept around this game system; I'm one of those poor people without a hardcore gaming computer. I will try out the free desktop-client demo and report back.

The $99 OnLive Game System is to be called the future gaming console. It doesn't have a bulky machine, no wires and hassle, all you need is a HD TV and the "console" itself.

This is OnLive gaming, where you spend your time playing instead of waiting.

  • Play games instantly. No discs, no giant downloads, no game updates.
  • Test-drive games instantly. And if you like the game, convert the trial into a rental or Full PlayPass instantly without having to start from the beginning.
  • Watch live gameplay instantly. Spectate live games played from everywhere. Cheer them on. Check out player profiles and “Friend” them.

This project for OnLive took 8 years in the making, but there are negatives to this brand new console. According to Yahoo, it seems like the game prices will be high for this console:

"And then there's the issue of pricing, ranging from 30-minute free demos to $5 for a three-day pass or all the way to $49 for a "full pass" for games like Mafia II—almost the same price as a retail disc, except you're only getting full "access" to the game rather than outright owning it."
