Well Im pretty sure you dont need the program to upload, because the program actually has an upload size limit, whereas the site does not. Obviously, with 41 engines, theres gonna be falses. If the file you downloaded is over a week old, and just one or two engines report a heuristic trojan, its a safe bet that thats a false positive. You also have to take into account the reputation of each engine. If avira reports no virus, but esafe says there is one, its more likely that its a false positive. I dont think Ive ever uploaded a file that it said was %100 clean, even files from legit sites, like maybe a CCleanr installation. So you need to use some discretion, but over all its a very good tool to have.

Thanks to Jeanjean's post about CDCheck, I for the first time I can remember heard of Virus Total.

I did a quick search on dotTech and see that a lot of people reference the service. I also went to their site and to me anyway it looks like a good service to use.

The thing I'm not to excited about is that it looks like you have to download a program before you can upload the file to them to check. I assume you upload it to them before installing it, or what good would it do to prevent a virus.

I guess I'd like to hear from those of you that use it, what you think of it.

Is it really a reliable service?

Have you ever run into excessive false negitive results using it?

Do you recommend using it?

Is it just a waste of time if someone already has an anti-virus running?

What are your general thoughts about it?
