]]> Thu, 10 Feb 2011 17:40:19 -0800 Mr.Dave on Vista Boot Time http://dottech.org/forums/gen-tech/vista-boot-time/#p14344 Gen-Tech http://dottech.org/forums/gen-tech/vista-boot-time/#p14344 My Vista boot time was very slow at one point - 4-5 minutes as I recall.  For me the best answer was to be careful about what I have loading at startup.  I mostly use AnVir task Manager to manage startups.  I disabled everything and then added then back one at a time until I found the culprits.  AVG was one of the ones I found, although my wife never had complaints on the laptop she uses, so odds are good it was AVG in combination with something else on my system.  AnVir Task Manager also lets you delay startup of selected items, the idea being that instead of doing everything at once so they're all fighting for disk I/O and CPU time, simply spready them out a bit.  Start the ones you need first, let the others follow later after you're already using your PC.

 

Shutdown was the slowest part of my PC day, often taking over 9 minutes.  I decided to quit being so paranoid and unchecked a setting somewhere that said to delete the page file contents on shutdown.  Now it takes about 20 seconds.

A search of this site for Soluto (Beta), will give a forum where some people had problems, but I have been using since June 2010 without any problems.  I had tried several other startup mangers before, but none were so effective, were so simple to use or gave such logical explanation about how to achieve the shorter boot time.  Good luck!  Smile

What are your specs though? If you have a pretty modern pc then it shouldn't take that long to boot up anyways. I have Windows 7 and Vista(sp1) and they both boot up pretty dam fast (on average hardware). So would this program mess up your computer? No, provided you follow the instructions. Is it worth the trouble? I think not.

 

If you REALLY want faster boot up times, use a solid state drive as your pc's main HD. (and of course have a good processor to begin with)

 

Update: After doing more research it seems that some people say this setting is used only for "debugging purposes", and won't really improve boot time. I'd recommened staying away from it, but if you wanna try, I'd like to hear your results.
