Use the usual techniques to COPY the LINK URL (typically from the browser address bar) or right-click and COPY LINK if within a web-page, then Paste into your post. Always double check to make sure it is complete, sometimes – especially if taking full text from a post – the link gets truncated and no longer works.

Rules about links

Lately, we've been noticing some people wondering what exactly the rules about outgoing links are here at dotTech. So, as admins, Karen, Amnesia and I have decided to make some (that's right, there were none, but people want some!). If any of these seem unfair or otherwise not needed, please post a comment here. Or, if you want something stricter, also post a comment.
- No tinyURLs or otherwise modified URLs.
- No "click here"s-be more descriptive, IE "visit Chip.DE's promotion page"
- Full links (http://dottech.org) are allowed
- Don't link to EXEs or ZIPs unless absolutely necessary-link to the official promotion/developer's page.
I'm guessing we'll be pretty lenient on these ones.

Thanks to all y'all……the Admins: Locutus, Karen, & Amnesia!
[Of course, Thanks to Mr. Boss, ...but I believe he's on a short, but well-deserved break right now]
This was a much needed addition to our site….
.. IMHO, I think that all those rules are reasonable & adds more security for our members, some of whom are not totally aware of the recent rash of bad/broken/old/misleading etc. & spammer's 
links [as well as those that are taken from some places that have not given the permission to post them anywhere else].
Life is just a phase you're going through…you'll get over it.

Good move admins.
My only other suggestion concerning the rules of the site would be to add one thread in the Announcements category that lists all current rules and that only you and Ashraf can post to.
That way all the rules will be in one place and be easy for everyone to find if a question comes up, without having to search thru all the categories for them.

That's a great idea! Since I'm not tech savvy (to say the least)
….wouldn't that be a way to prevent the 'blind' clicking on of links (esp. for newer members & guests who are not aware of some of the possible dangers)

….. of the CLICK HERE brigade?
Also…wouldn't that be one way to help thwart the spammers…..if no one would be subject to their placing of infested links in those posts??
If not, it seems that we are getting closer to figuring out how to take away the power from spammers—so no one could click on their links directly—and thus, they would cry 
& pout 
& throw a fit & make them feel like they just want to……. take their malware toys & go home!!

I always try to make sure any included links are given in full together with commentary where appropriate or necessary (please forgive any slip-ups), so this "rule" seems reasonable.

Karen: Good idea and a great start.
What Locutus called the "lots'o rules post" would be a bear to type up the first time so that all the past and recent rules are listed. But once it's done it'd be much easier to keep up.
If it gets done or not tho is in Ashraf's hands and the hands of all you admins. So as usual, do what you-all feel is right. I'm sure that in the end the best thing for dotTech will be done, at exactly the right time.

I'll add: Don't link directly to the download (i.e. don't make a link here with a ".exe" or ".zip" etc. ending). Instead, link to the promotional page where we can find the download link.

Why not? i usually get to a topic after everyone else has seen it, so i know it's safe. would it be possible to have one to the promotion page, and one to the file for convineance?

Same here, I have come to rely on Dot Tech approval of almost everything tech related. I have learned there are some pretty tech savvy people here and some even have scruples.
