Very sound advice. Most, if not all, drivers/software work on Win7 even if they are not officially supported.

After I upgraded from XP SP3 to WIN7 HP, my speakers would work but not my microphone. (WIN7 could not find it at all.) Neither MS nor Intel were any help except that MS insisted that there were no nongeneric WIN7 drivers for the sound chips on my Intel board. That was why device manager listed MS as the manufacturer.

After a lot of research, I found that many people had similar difficulties but that some people could use the old XP drivers to solve the sound problem. So, on the Intel site, I downloaded the old drivers, installed them, and voila!

I had to do two more things to get sound to work. I had to reconfigure the speakers and the mic using the device manager that opens when you right-click on the speaker icon in the task bar, and I had to use Skype's sound configuration tool to tell it which option I was using. (I expected Skype to pull the configuration from Device Manager, but it needed to be "reassured.")

So, if you have a similar problem, try your old device driver--they might work in WIN7!
