Gross domestic product fell 0.2% in the first quarter from the final three months of 2012, according to a report Wednesday from the European Union's statistics office Eurostat. GDP fell 0.6% in the fourth quarter. The current downturn has now stretched for longer than the 2008-2009 recession, though the drop in output isn't yet as severe as it was four years ago.

Business surveys for April suggest the bloc's economy will likely decline again this quarter. Euro-zone GDP last expanded during the third quarter of 2011, a time when Germany was growing at rates of 3% or more and recessions were largely limited to small countries such as Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

But Germany, which accounts for nearly one-third of euro-zone output, shows little sign of rebounding quickly this year. Its GDP expanded just 0.1% on a quarterly basis from the fourth quarter, a much weaker gain than economists had expected. My PC had to be rebuild following a power failure which blew the motherboard, the RAM and the primary HDD. I have cobbled together a temp' replacement using an old Packard Bell 2.2Ghz processor, 1.5Gb RAM and with 2 x SATA drives. This did have an old 80Gb IDE drive (with XP pro on it) as the primary drive and it was working as a dual boot machine fine. However, when I removed the IDE drive and replaced it with a 2nd SATA drive it keeps suddenly shutting itself down and going into sleep mode (but won't wake with any key press or mouse movement) and has to be turned off at the PSU. I've turned the power setting to Never Turn Off for both the PC and monitor but no change.

Has anyone any ideas please?

The Solution: right-click on a program’s desktop icon and select Properties, then select the Compatibility tab. Once there, do the following:
1) Check the Run in program compatibility mode box, and from its drop-down menu select Windows 7.
2) Check the box in front of the line that reads Disable display scaling on high DPI settings.
3) Check the box in front of the line that reads Run as an administrator.
4) Click “Apply” (on the bottom row of buttons).
5) Click Apply to all users box.
6) repeat these same settings for all Users.
7) Click “Apply” (on the bottom row of buttons).
8) Click “OK” & “OK”.

I have successfully used this technique in Thunderbird (email program), my 3rd-party file manager (Xplorer2) and Firefox in order to maintain the font size I set them to.

Unfortunately, you have to do this individually for each mis-behaving application, and the settings don’t always hold, but its the best, and to date only, work-around I’ve found to the problem.
