OfflineSeveral people have been suggesting that Ashraf put up a chat box to keep "chatter" out of the forums.
But my opinion, is that this "Talk It Up" forum, is for chatter. And also, that we should try to keep the other forums free of chatter--although I've been guilty of that myself
So what do you think? A chat box or try to keep "chatter" to the Talk It Up forum?
Offline
OfflineInteresting question.
A chat box would isolate the wandering topics and hopefully be entertaining enough that people would keep the other topics to the point.
However, I can also see where using the Talk It Up portion of the forum may be more useful because there may not always be someone online to chat with. At least by using Talk It Up, comments can still be left and replied to later when people do log in.
I'd probably ask if a new category could be started that would be titled something more along the lines of "general chat" (not that exact name tho, it's too boring). To me, the Talk It Up title makes me think the category is more for promotion of giveaways than general chat.

@Wheezer – the subtitle for Talk It Up is "Chat with fellow dotTechies here about anything."
SECONDED.
A point I had noticed but not got round to mentioning.
"Talk It UP" it is then – O.K.?
Let those that post here take due note that they should be prepared to accept anything (decent and legal) that ensues.
Just be careful to put really serious posts in the correct Forum category to where they belong. If in doubt, it may be possible
for a moderator re-locate any such queries – so long as the poster clearly asks for help on this in their initial post. But that is for them to say – this is only a suggestion.

There are pros and cons for both
Pros
1. Just this morning I had a question and you answered it in one sentence.
Had we had a chat box, I could have followed your instructions and given a response in chat.
2. Sometime in real time chat you can get to know people a little better.
Cons
1. If I had not posted my question, that would be one less post for me and you. Thereby creating a missed opportunity for getting closer to next status level for which I notice is important to some poster. ) I did not know that was a criteria for status change until it was brought to my attention recently.)
2. If no one is there, you still have to post your question.
3. You may find good conversation and spend way too much time here.

4. Topics that are discussed in chat will only benefit those that are there. (I am not sure how we could share the wealth)
Random thoughts
It would be good if we had a setup where people could see if anyone is in chat when they enter the site, that way they can just come to chat for a quick response.
If we are in chat we could still browse forums and talk in chat at the same time.
I vote chat box and continued posting for info that is worthy of a post which would benefit all.

While all your points are good, #3 is the one that hit home the hardest. And at my typing and thinking speed, folks might get tired of waiting for me.

I think they've now identified the male gene that causes men to refuse to look at maps and read directions, and pre-programs them, when questioned, to grunt things like: "I don't need to look at a map, I know where I'm going/I have a natural sense of direction/my mind is like a radar."
