Example: I use a CPAP machine (it's for Sleep Apnea – you stop breathing in your sleep). XXXX CPAP Company charges $5000 (yes, five thousand dollars) for the machine. It's a pretty sophisticated machine, but it's hard imagining how it could possibly be worth that much.

Anyway, after spending $5000 on their machine, they want another $200 from the patient for software and a "smart card" reader to simply print a report of the data generated by the machine. In many cases this data might be critical to the patients health. Also in many cases (like mine) a patient can't afford another $200 for a simple report writer!

So……I could (but haven't yet) download the software "illegally" on the internet and buy a reader for about 20 bucks.

If I do it, who is the more evil here…me for "stealing" the software, or XXXX CPAP Company for screwing patients out of $200 or worse, preventing patients from access to data that could literally save their life? (Many Sleep Apnea patients die from heart related problems.)

OK….I'll get off my soapbox now and go think about whether I sacrifice my health for my morals,  sacrifice my morals for my health, or maybe just find the 200 bucks somewhere to pay the #$%^& CPAP Company.

@ Ebony: Aw shucks. I guess it's like so many things in life: it can be used for either good or bad purposes. In itself it isn't a bad thing. In fact, far from it (in an ideal world). It's just about how people choose to use it ...

The purpose for my original question was so that the poster would give the use and benefit of the site.

Just as in the freeware posting, and tell us a little bit about its purpose.

I had no idea about the illegal part. I just did not want to have to go out of look for the purpose. Was just hoping poster that post re sites and freeware would give more of an explanation.
