Improvement, (if not change!) is never ending. Although having “fire in the belly” sometimes only requires antacid, at other times it could actually improve matters. Wisdom of course lies in knowing the difference – should “fire in the belly” be allowed to run its course or should it merely be treated with antacid. Smile

http://www.dottech.org has “fire in the belly” & also the wisdom to know whether to treat it with antacid or allow it to run its course. Smile

My suggestion relates to the way we do our archiving. To keep this discussion focussed I am training my sights currently only upon forum archives.

I have deliberately not focussed upon mainblog as of now only because our average views per thread on main blog & comments per thread on main blog has improved sharply in the last 6 weeks. Our good recipe has enough mustard in it.

I make this suggestion inspite of having a search tool inside our forum. I make this suggestion after observing other blogs too. I make it with good intention.

We have a two pronged archive filter:-

  1. Forum Category Filter – 13 categories under 3 mega categories
  2. New/Recently Updated

Perhaps we should have a three pronged archive filter:-

  1. Forum Category Filter – 13 categories under 3 mega categories
  2. New/Recently Updated
  3. Tags & multiple tags if a thread covers various aspects

Why do I suggest this?

  1. Forum thread title does not “always” convey everything. Netiquette stops me from elaborating. Introspect. The richness of the content requires mutiple tags.
  2. We have already populated 526 threads in our forum. Let us act before the backlog builds up even more than 526. We are just 16 months old but we seem to be a very “energetic” & “intelligent” blog. So the numbers will shoot far beyond 526 very soon.
  3. It would further impress & gain us more members. It could help us not only in becoming the best blog in our category in the whole world (we are already tying for the first place :)  ) but also the blog with the most members in this category  :). Our “threads to members” ratio is 526:1296. This ratio, I intuit, can & will improve.
  4. Point 3 would impress everyone because many bloggers are rather short of time. Impressing/Satisfying them within that “short time window” would make the dottech experience even more enjoyable & even benefit the site itself.
  5. I wonder if “search stress” on the server reduces when you have “tag search as well” and not just “Category Filter” & “Update Filter”.* If that is true then there may also be good financial implications for our beloved webmaster. We also help our beloved webmaster all the more. Oh I am not trying to peep into his private financial domain. I say this with affection & as a wellwisher because he keeps giving us so much. I keep trying to find ways to give something back to him.

If we are okay with this why not each thread starter suggest tag/tags started by him or her & give these to our webmaster so that Ashraf could create the third filter aka tag filter.

There is at least one dottechie I know who owns many web domains & has even paid for one so there is a lot of man years on this subject. I am sure there are other dottechies with knowledge & expertise on this area. Its another constructive way of saying “Thank You” to Ashraf.

What is your take on this matter?

I also make this suggestion despite a quantum improvement in our forum stats:-

  1. Good membership increase
  2. Good increase in number of threads
  3. Good increase in number of threads per day
  4. Good increase in posts per thread (the average has trebled)
  5. Good increase in posts per thread per day
  6. A lot of talented & articulate members have entered the dottech family – too many to be named

I like all the rest of us still get the feeling that even better days are ahead.
