A webhost whose owner is a friend of mine is currently holding a contest whereby someone can win a free VPS. One of the requirements is that I refer ten members, who then make 10 posts each. I would love it if some of the DotTech community would help me to win the VPS, since I would really like it for my sites. I could add many new features that I could not possibly add on shared hosting.

As it turns out, one of the community members here has already helped me out. Locutus was kind enough to sign up and make the ten post requirement, and I'm hoping more will too.

So, how to do it? Sign up at forums.hubrocket.com, make the ten posts, and post back here with your selected username, so I can quote that in claiming the reward.

Thank you all in advance!

D. Strout

It's actually surprisingly easy to do it.  There are lots of posts like "what is your favorite color", "what languages do you speak", "what country are you from", etc.  Plus, there are incentives for you too: free hosting with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 35, or more posts.

Oh, the site that was :(

@ dstrout: Seriously? Sign up for a service that you give us no information about that we then have to click on and hope it's legit? Then make 10 posts? So you can win a prize that you will use for your "sites" – which you also give us no information about? The latter piece of information would be nice as we could decide if indeed we would want to support your "sites". I have no objection to helping people out or in taking time out of my day to help people – but come on …

@ Locutus: Why have you just blindly accepted this? Dude, you're an admin.

Again, just so it is clear: I do not have a problem with people asking for support. But just being asked to take the things I mentioned at face value without any clarification is a big ask. So sorry, I won't be assisting you in this matter.

These are perfectly legitmate concerns, so I will answer them. First, like I said, I know the owner. I have used his hosting services in the past, and had no problems. He does his best to support his users, and if you look around the forums, you'll be hard-pressed to find unresolved complaints. As to my sites, you can find more information on them at this thread. Also, here is a list with a brief description of each:

DStrout.net – My personal site. Basically just links to all the others, hope to give it a makeover soon. Fairly low bandwidth.

U3Applications.com – A site providing free U3 applications to the public. It is frequented by many, and uses a lot of bandwidth. If I get the VPS, I want to set up a script that can automatically update the apps with a cron job. This is impossible on shared hosting, as the resource requirements are too high.

SpamLot – A free disposable e-mail site. I know there are lots of those out there, but this one has many unique features such as bulk message handling, private inboxes, and more. With a VPS, I could extend the featureset even more, adding support for such things as attachements. This is a fairly low bandwidth site as well, since it doesn't have a bunch of downloads.

There you are. I hope that gives you and others increased confidence, and you will be more willing to lend a hand.

This type of post is fine with me, since dstrout is very clear about what he wants, why he is posting this, his association with said website, and his stake in the matter.

However, P_R does have a point: It would be better if dstrout clarified exactly what he wants to use the VPS for. You don't necesarily have to tell us what the website is, if you don't want; but it would be nice to be told exactly what type of websites they are. It would help people better judge if they want to spend the time to help out or not, since some people may be opposed to helping if the VPS is used for a purpose they don't agree with/don't like.

EDIT: BTW dstrout's website can be found under dotTech's "I have a website too!" forum.

@ dstrout:wThank you for the clarification, dstrout. Appreciated.

@ Ashraf: Something's amiss with the "math required": I had 2+2. It kept telling me 4 was the wrong answer. Also, personally I would want to see the links to a person's website/s if they asked for support, and not just have them tell me about them … call me unduly cautious if you will, but why wouldn't they let people see for themselves if it was above-board (as dstrout has done)? Surely it is in the interests of openness and transparency, not to mention basic internet security.

Thank you for the clarification, dstrout. Appreciated.

The links are included in the post. Just click "DStrout.net", "U3Applications.com", and "SpamLot" to see the sites. @Ashraf, you can also see my URL by clicking my profile link. That links to my main site, which links to my other ones.

Because I've been talking with D Strout for a few days and I'm perfectly fine with this just like Ashraf?

While I agree that the post could've been better worded and that it could've had a better explanation, I think that it is perfectly fine to say "hey, I want to win this contest, I need referrals".  Plus, it's a pretty cool forum.
Glad to see you're ok now.

Well, I hope everyone feels that the necessary information has been supplied, and that everyone is being as above-board as possible. I would like to apologise for not being more so to begin with. If you feel there is any information not being supplied, feel free to ask.

I did want to mention that one other very small requirement of the contest is that two people have to follow me on the forum. Locutus has already done this, so I only need one more. If you agree to help out, then after signing up, check out my profile here, and click the "Follow" link at the top right.

@ dstrout: No, it's cool. I thought it was great that you responded so promptly and positively. It's really refreshing.

@ Locutus: My powers of ESP and mind-reading are not as sharp as they used to be. Had they been, I'm sure I could have tapped into that knowledge. I'm sure you understood what I meant and why I said it, and why it's kinda good info to have.

Again, thanks dstrout. Good luck with it.
