So. Everytime someone would see my desktop, they would make a comment along the lines "wow you have so many icons". My usual reply would be "yes I know". Well I decided I am going to take charge and let this laptop know who is boss.
The result? I just went from having 100+ icons down to 4 icons… in the process uninstalling about ~20 software.
Huzzah.
Aren't you all proud of me?

that means…
x=current icons
y=old number of icons
z=difference of x and y
a=pieces of uninstalled software
b=icons per software
y-x=z
z/a=b
100-4=96
96/20=4.8 icons per software? Ouch. What software was that?
(And I have to do math to post this! Bah!)

I like the Fences program to organize my icons. I tend to have lots of them on the desktop too. I think it is easier to find them there than to have to look at the start menu.
Fences does make it easy to see where you might have duplicate apps. I have a Fence for System Utilities, Photo Apps, Video Apps, etc. So it is really easy to look in the appropriate Fence to see if I already have something with a similiar function.
