Hi! Ebony, welcome to dottech Smile

I have (for now) XP Pro SP3 32bit. My USBSR didn’t show up until I
installed an all-in-one usb printer that has a ‘external storage
device’.

Now, I have dis-connected, and re-connected it when the PC was
off, and have never suffered any ill effects as you describe, but
that just the way I learned.

Whenever adding or removing any component on my PC I always do it
cold, never ‘hot-swap’.

I never had use for flash cards (yet), but for the camera, I
loaded the drivers then shut-down then plugged it into the USB
connection then started back up, and win found the drivers, and
finished the install. I regularly plug n’ unplug the cord when I want
to download my pix’s, and use it again (I use Picasa3).

We do use the DW’s phone card in the printer’s card reader to
download pix’s with the PC on, again with no ill effects.

I would think the keyboard, and mouse shouldn’t have an affect on
‘hot-swapping’, but the flash drive, and backup external HDD would
because the OS recognizes them as ‘drives’, and it has to make
accommodations for them each, and every time their used.

Especially the flash drives with their extreme portability.

You say ‘sometimes’. XP, and Vista have been known to have problems seeing
other devices. This problem is caused by two Windows registry entries
that have become corrupted.

This MSKB applies to Vista also:

I said for now earlier because we are going shopping for a new PC
tonight, and the one we have an eye on is a win7 64bit unit.

I’ve only begun experiencing the switch from 32 to 64, and already
have a skull pain. Wink

We’re not much into hardcore gaming, but this’ll hold us for a while:

Well if they’re not planning on gaming integrated should be fine.  After
all the rest of the machine can handle lots of stuff-I wouldn’t make
a movie on it but it’d sure be possible to watch an HD movie
fine.

ALSO!  VERY IMPORTANT!

Upgrade the OS to Windows 7 Home Premium!  You do not
want to have Windows 7 Home Basic!

I repeat:  You do not want Home Basic!  NOO!  IT IS NOT
GOOD!  UPGRADE!  IT IS BBAAADDD!

Thank You. Just got back with the goodies Smile, but will be taking my time to set up.

Have to move one to my telescope for astrophotography, then this one
goes where that one is, and the ‘newbie’ gets routed to that.

I agree, I’ve been looking at a couple of Radeon’s; a 4850, and a ATI
Radeon 4650 card for around $65, but for now like I said earlier. I’m
not into any hard driving graphics.

I was pushing this XP I’m on now with working my astro pix’s, and it
has onboard graphics.

I’m hoping with the newer Intel onboard graphics I won’t have to
upgrade, but that is an option.

Just saw your new posts. Your not going through some cybernetic
rejection are you?

I know you are aware that drones can escape the collective (most
notably Seven of

Nine), and become individuals, or exist collectively without forced

assimilation of others.

We will be okay, where we bought the ‘newbie’, it already had premium
on it. CoolSmileWink

Don’t believe everything you see or read.

Hi! jumbi, I was just going to suggest that myself! Wink

As Locutus said above, an integrated graphics card is fine unless you are doing hard-core gaming or lots of video editting.  My laptop has a Core 2 Duo P8600 @ 2.4Ghz, 4GB memory, and integrated graphics and it doesn’t have any problem playing Blu-Ray disks or doing just about any photo related chores.  I haven’t really tried any video editing on it but it does just fine at video conversion.
