That’s a good price for commercial anti-malware, but why not go with something free like MSE, Avast, etc.

great price for a commercial freeware, but have to agree with karen, just go with a freeware AV. recommend Avira. Anyway, amongst the commercial AV TM just isn't as good as the competition .

Hey PCbasics!

As an alternative, there is the always free, online tool that I use every few weeks, & that is the Trend Micro's HouseCall:

It's a ….”highly popular and capable on-demand scanner for identifying and removing viruses, Trojans, worms, unwanted browser plugins, and other malware…..”

@ PCbasics: It's one of a number of online scanners. ESET, Kapersky, F Secure, Symantec, Panda, etc, all have browser-based scanners.

Here a few: http://www.computertrouble.ca/…..us-scanner

Note that not all disinfect. Most do, but not all.

I think PCBasics meant “another online scanner that you wouldn't touch with a ten-foot poll”.

I have no idea what scanner he's talking about.

Oh, the site that was :(

@ PCbasics: VirusTotal is a bit different in that it can be used to scan files of up to only 20MB (from memory). The others will do total systems scans.

Oh, and VirusTotal is now available as a Firefox add-on (VTzilla), and will allow you to scan web links and files before downloading. A great extension to have. It's available at: http://www.virustotal.com/advanced.html#browser-addons

Actually I believe the desktop client removes the 20MB limit.

@ Locutus: I didn't even know they had a desktop client, so thanks for the info.

@ Locutus: Now it's staring me in the face, I can't believe my eyes have missed it all this time. Bizarre. Or maybe I'm just getting older and blinder.

OOOOH.  I just realized something.  That page is a really really old page.  The new page is http://www.virustotal.com/adva…..ed.html.  And the main page links to it.

EDIT: and it says only files <20MB.

@ Locutus: We've gone around in circles and are back where we started from, me thinks. But thanks for the revised link.

Better to be back where we started than have gone in the wrong direction, I always say. Smile

(OK this is the first time, but still…)
