That site *always* seemed hinkey to me. Not sure where it originated but (we can hope) English was not their native language. Language, though, was the least of their problems.

On at least 2 occasions, I *know* they posted bogus offerings (presumably) to harvest e-mail addresses. How do I know? Because I used a throw-away email address dedicated for that site and started getting massive spam (and probably worse, I never opened any of it) along with failing to get the promised program.

I stopped visiting them awhile ago and, in cleaning out my links, happened to visit them again; only to discover they were history.

Evidently, I wasn't the only one they did this to. Sadly, not all sites are like dottech.

Thanks for that, Blue -- and apologies for not replying sooner. In view of your experience, I'm doubly pleased that particular website is no longer active. I guess it's as Living Spirit says, some sites really are depressing. Not so dot tech (though I wish there'd be a quick word from Ashraf sooner rather than later, if it's not too much hassle!)

I am just so glad that there ARE legitimate people and places who not only ARE helpful and generous in their nature, but also actually look after one's best interests and do not intentively do any activity which could harm or annoy the very people they claim to serve.

Thanks everyone for the info (Locutus for special mention re the SQL). As Phoenix says, karma is a bitch. I too would hope that any future incarnation of that site will have the same decent motives (to help the Internet community as a whole) but next time, without the self-defeating malice.

Right. That's it. Subject closed!

Because I don't think any of us wanted to buy into the whole thing then, and I reckon we should maintain that stance now. If it's gone, good. R.I.P. I just hope that if that site's creator(s) start up again, that he (or they, as the case may be) does so with more maturity. By engaging in such practices, they only succeeded in compromising themselves and their integrity. We all know that karma worked. That's sufficient.

If it is the one I'm thinking of, I stopped visiting it quite a long time ago when they began launching attacks on our good host. And no great loss if it has gone down the gurgler. What goes around, comes around … karma's a bitch.

A couple of caveats first:

(i) I'm not going to identify the website and:

(ii) it would be appreciated if anyone responding to this enquiry could exercise similar restraint.

The website I have in mind will be well-known to many dot techies. It developed a malicious paranoia where dot tech and, especially, its founder was concerned. The malice was never reciprocated and everyone connected with, and to, dot tech displayed a maturity under attack that could only have frustrated the attacker still further.

As I'm one of those who vainly believes in fair play whether on the Internet or anywhere else, the demise of that particular site was always going to be welcome news. And now, according to friend of mine, that's exactly what has happened. The site has vanished.

Can any dot techie (who knows what I'm referring to here) confirm? Thanks.
