I have never used .COM but basically the difference between .COM and .ORG is just as Locutus says - with .ORG you need your own host and you need to set everything up yourself. With .COM you basically just signup and Wordpress is already setup for you - you customize whatever you want. .COM is more restrictive than .ORG. Settings up .ORG is fairly easy but you do need to have a good understanding of basic computing and web hosting to get it done.

Well with Wordpress.org, you need your own server (with PHP and MySQL) to install it onto. However, all the things you've ever wanted to do-other themes, etc.-is possible on .org. They just dont have free hosting or a free domain.

Cogizio and dotTech run on .ORG.

Hi Wheezer

WordPress can be a bit confusing at first to a newbie, BUT once you get the hang of it, it isn't that bad. However, it is highly recommended that one backs up the site regularily.

As for support, the support forum is great. I had a major problem with my initial installation of WordPress since it wasn't the normal type of setup. (a domain within a domain.) The support staff where my site is hosted said they would fix it, but made things even worse. This took about 1 1/2 mths.

I went to the support site and asked for help. and voila, it was fixed within 10 min.

There are also many sites on the net that offer help with WordPress.

P.S. Just wanted to add that I know what you are feeling about doing something free for someone and they don't seem to appreciate it.

Oh hi there. I'm new on Dot.Tech, but I do know some stuff about the differences between Wordpress.org and Wordpress.com.

Here are the good things about .org:

-allows java-script, so you can add tons of fancy widgets or addons onto your .org blog

-allows 3rd party themes, where else .com only restricts only to their themes

-instead of online, you can make and edit your blog on your desktop

Here are the bad things about .org:

-since you make and edit your blog on a program that you have to install off the 'net, when you update, it may erase all the hard work you have done if something goes terribly wrong

Other than that... it's very similar to the .com one. This is what a friend told me when he used .org. Hope that helped!

If you have used wordpress.com and wordpress.org, I have a question that I would like to have answered.

Here's the story: I have been making a website for a friend's resturaunt. Do to some stuff going on in my personal life I haven't been able to completely finish it as fast as my friend would like. The site is up and running, there's just some info and a couple pages that I haven't gotten around to adding yet.

I should also add that I'm doing this for free. I made it clear before starting that it may take some time to complete the site because I'd be doing it in my free time.

My friend sent me a very nice email a couple days ago asking if I could tell her how to work on the site, so she can help finish it. But she doesn't want to buy the program I use (Website X5) if she doesn't have to. I'm not sure about how to get her the work file for the site without causing a lot more work for me too.

So I'm thinking about suggesting that we trash the site that I've evedentallly wasted my time setting up and start over using WordPress.org. I've used WordPress.com and know how to use that, but haven't tried the .org side.

My question is this: Is .org easy enough to use that someone with even less computer knowledge than I have will be able to pick it up and make a site? Is it pretty much the same as the .com side?

I'd be available to her for some help, but to be honest, I'm ticked off that she wants me to trash all the work I've done so far. So I'm sure not going to do much work on her new site.

I'd appreciate any comments/opinions you can offer.

Thank you.
