Ah, well. . .

Half an hour of my life I won't get back again. But hopefully, it's been worth it.

Checking other sites (like Gizmo's) has confirmed that, yet again, Avira is currently "having problems" -- yet again -- with its updating. As I've experienced enough of these problems in the past, I've bitten the bullet and said, regretfully, farewell Avira.

Because AV apps are notoriously bad at uninstalling themselves, I've used Revo to get rid and clear up Avira left-overs. I've rebooted, then used my jv16PowerTools to clean the registry (I use only this cleaner because of its double-check safety process and back-up: it has never let me down, and never been stupidly aggressive l;ike many another so-called registry cleaner I can think of.)

jv16PowerTools found registry entries which Revo missed (not surprising) and cleared 'em out. Another reboot, all's well, and I've installed Avast Antivirus Free Edition without a hitch.

It's now working perfectly in harmony with my Online Armor firewall / scanner.

I've obviously no idea at this stage of how good Avast is going to be. So. . . Fingers crossed!!

Avira has reported in the past that demand on its servers is often so great, it can't manage the update process.

I'm now on the fifth day of no updates being downloaded.

That's a long time not to have up-to-date AV definitions installed.

I've tried, at various times, to get the update function to work, but the Updater screen simply hangs.

A manual update is possible, of course, but I'm not about to spend time on a 27Mb download of the entire definitions library merely for the sake of getting a fraction of that onto my computer.

Avira users like myself experienced all this last year (particularly in May/June, and October) and the year before. The problem was principally over Avira Free version updating, though a couple of users had update problems with the paid-for PRO version as well.

Does anyone have a clue how to get around this?

I really don't mind the nag screen Avira splashes on my PC every time an update comes through. I do mind, however, being yet again in a situation where the AV knows it's out of date, because it keeps telling me it's out of date. . . yet is seemingly incapable of updating itself.

Maybe I should use a different AV after all?
