I'm feeling particularly moronic tempered by relief. I can't recall what else I did after my post but after rebooting all appears normal. I had rebooted before posting so not sure what was still left to clear out. But I'm so happy to report JottiQ works, EAC is friendly again with freedb, and I'm off to create myself a restore point then look at a firewall (Outpost or MSE are leading contenders; if the latter I may move off Avast as well).

Cheers!

First JottiQ wasn't working, then other programs when they went to check for updated version couldn't connect to check, Sun java can't download latest version, and EAC can't connect to freedb. Yet IE and FF seem to be working just fine. Along the way of misery I recalled that I uninstalled Windows Defender and wonder if that is the cause of this.

Can someone help me figure this out and fix? Thank you!!

I'm on Win XP Pro 32bit SP3.

Internet options:

Security – Internet= Medium-high

Privacy= Medium-high

LAN settings are all blank/all boxes unchecked.

Security Center settings:

Firewall= unmonitored (uninstalled
Comodo)

Virus
Protection= unmonitored (using Avast! v5 free, all shields running--tried with Avast disabled but still didn’t work).

Perhaps more sadly ...... I don't seem to have any system restore points to revert to. Normally I have many. I ran CCleaner yesterday, maybe it removed them all?
