I can restore my computer to a system restore point created after I installed jv16 PowerTools, but cannot restore to a point created before the installation.  The points show on the System Restore screen, but when I try to restore to any of them, Windows tries and then says it couldn't do it.

This certainly doesn't encourage confidence in JV 16 !

Ouch! I recommend emailing the developer–I'm sure they'd be happy to help you.

You can restore the changes made by JV16 2010. After JV16 opens, partway down the left side of the GUI is a button called “Backup”. Click it and all the changes you made using JV16 will be listed. Put a tick mark in the one you want to restore and click the Restore button at the bottom. This will undo any changes made by JV16 that may have affected your OS's system restore and caused it to lose restore points. If this doesn't fix your problem, then it's probably not related to JV16.

Can I also suggest using ERUNT for system restores (http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/). I rely it on 100 percent as I've had problems with the in-built system restore in the past. IMHO, it's one of those must-have progs that will save your bacon if, for any reason, system restore has a problem.

Agree at 100% ! Two precautions are better than one and ERUNT is anyway much, much more efficient.

@ Jeanjean: Yep, it's a fantastic little program. Too late to save cassuis from the present problem, but definitely worth it in the future should such things happen again.

Wait, I thought Erunt only backs up the registry? Doesn't system restore do more than that?

It does. It backs up the WINDOWS folder as well (which, un-coincidentally, contains the registry hives).
