This thread was an interesting read. Made me think that maybe someone should start a thread that everyone could play like a game. Someone comes up with an imaginary issue, and the rest of us try to figure out what could be causing it.

Oh wait. We do that with real issues all the time. Oh well... Ignore this post.

Checking the permissions is probably worthwhile (and easy). Just right-click on the folder and select properties. Verify that the "read-only" flag and the "archive" flags are not set.

"My Videos" is also usually a short-cut in the system to something like "C:UsersyournameVideos".

In that same right-click Properties dialog, there should be a "Location" tab. You can check there to see where it is really pointing and then check the permissions on that folder. Or you can even change where the "My Videos" points to and move all the existing contents to the new location.

That's how I ended up solving the problem I was having with PowerDirector crashing on my old XP laptop.

It's a great way to fix a problem!

As for GaryKC's issue, I've got no idea what would cause that either.

Just in case it is something funky with your current folder, you could move all your videos to a new folder, delete the old video folder completely, then rename the new folder to "videos."

If you haven't already done that, that is.

@GaryKC: Not sure. I've used most of those programs before to convert stuff in My Videos folder (I'm on Win7 Pro x64) with no trouble.

Recently bought a new camcorder, downloaded a 2 minute video to my videos folder, when attempting to convert that mov file using format factory, fast video converter, socusoft converter...any converter really, file won't open, converter program shuts down. Moved mov file from my videos folder to another folder, all converter programs work as designed.

Why do you think files in my videos folder can't be opened using converter programs, whats stopping them?
