I think it is a software issure, I've taken off all external addons, ie. the printer, backupdrive, wireless mouse and keyboard. I also updated all drivers and checked for a bios update. Nothing seems to work.

I'll be calling MS again to get the full disk, hopefully that will install fine. I have a lot of programs intalled due to my work but all are compatible with Win 7.

I'm going to try getting the disk from MS. then run all of the checks you have so generously supplied.

Hi Steelers 6! Hadn't heard from you in a while. Has your problem been solved? It appears that from 5 possibilities you've narrowed it down somewhat.

Bios

Master Bootup

Software

Hardware Driver

Hardware

At the moment you seem to think it is a software issue. You've already ruled out Bios & Master Bootup.Ok. Good. You are taking physical media only from Microsoft. Good. When I met you last inside this thread I had suggested you check 2 things –

Verify whether all sys files are there on the physical media you have

Verify whether every one of those files have system integrity

I had left you suggesting you use a "depending checker app" for you OS to take care of point number 1. I am now giving you the names of "good dependency checker apps. I am also giving you the names of some articles very useful in dependency checking. These are the credits for those articles so you can read them yourself.

Steelers 6 please also refer to the article called – Scan,

Backup And Delete Orphan DLL Files

I am quoting 2 portions from this –

"DLL Archive has been designed to scan and backup

a computer system for orphan dll files. The program will identify all dll files and then verify if these files are references by files that load dll files. Orphan dlls are not references by any of these files".

from the developer’s website".

Since in this post I've given the credits to the people who wrote these wonderful articles why don't you read them to see if it helps you solve your problem?

This may help other Win7 dottechies too.

So if the monitor has turned off because of inactivity and you move the mouse it crashes? Is it an immediat crash or is there some time? If it's immediate then it definitely sounds like a BIOS problem now. Try the update, but make sure its under conditions where the computer is least likely to crash. So if you generally have some time between startup to crash then do it asap, because if the computer crashes during a BIOS update it's possible that you will never use that computer again O_o. Don't worry though, BIOS updates are usually quick.

If you have a Microsoft TechNet account I think you can download Windows install ISOs, but I don't have one so I wouldn't know.

While it is important to be good let no one take advantage of your goodness. Meaning pepare to hit back hard; very hard! .......If required.

While you are waiting for your hard disk from Microsoft you might find it useful to check with guys who are dissatified with Dell, prepare a fact file proactively & if & when you prosecute do that with preparation & aplomb. Why let kindness be mistaken for weakness! For all you know there may even be a gripesite. No harm equipping yourself with facts since a lot of money has been spent. Also read your Dell agreement carefully. You might discover that it may be defined not just in terms of time & in terms of physical aspects too

This feels sad.

Good luck

It will also point out if some sys files have to instantiate more than once meaning they have to reside in more than one folder. Attempting to find out manually is very touch.

Hi Steelers6!

Hold on! I think there is a solution in this very thread & it possibly is to be found in post no.8, that is, the second last post made by Pwnana as of now in this thread. Man this guy is really cool & sharp like all others. I feel safe, secure & happy being in this bright & good dottech family!

I am quoting a few posts. They are very incisive as are the others. I also curse myself for thinking conventionally when I should have thought laterally this time. Focus on these quotations & see if it helps:-

1)"Try checking the system integrity, there could be an error in a system file" - Pwnana in post number 8 - a very perceptive point

2)"As for Window 7 I reinstalled the entire program after a bad upgrade using Windows Professional. They had me download Professional and never sent me the disk. So I installed Windows Home Premium I got from Dell. I hope they send the Preofessional Disk Soon" - Steelers6 - *A significant observation so park this in your mind* See not only you got the disk late even that disk you got late may possibly be lousy

3)"Did try running it straight after you reinstalled the OS, before you put any software on. Or did you add software straight after installing the OS?" - amnesia post no.12. - a very perceptive point wow! Steelers6 you must answer the amnesia raised

4)"Well then its most likely a hardware issue. If completely uninstalling and reinstalling windows didn't solve the problem, then we can almost rule out software issues" - Pwnana post no.13 - could very well be but don't jump to this conclusion...............yet

Steelers6 please do not conclude that just because you reinstalled; the media from which you installed was perfect. How do you know it was perfect? You checked whether the system files in that media had integrity. Did you check each individual system file with a checksum or simply assume it was ok because you got it from a reputed vendor? Doesn't everyone make mistakes - even reputed vendors. If Microsoft makes mistakes on updates cannot a vendor make a mistake on a physical media?. Why cannot a media be wrong?

Assuming for the present that integrity of the sys files are ok, how do you conclude that all sys files are there? Dottechies can confrm (I am referring to this "DLL Hell matter" both literally & as an analogy. Don't we all know that an OS runs even if some of its dlls are missing? Including some system dlls? Including even some shared dlls. Including even orphan files

Therefore 3 things my dear dear friend:-

1) In the current situation do not install OS through a physical medium but directly through internet &/or directly from Microsoft only. If that is difficult or impractical use a media which you are 100% sure has got all sys files & all sys files have got integrity. In today's world no business man has the patience or the naivete to check & tell that a disk authored by him is defective. Neither Dell nor Microsoft would admit it. Everyone is not an Ashraf.

2) Check not only "integrity". Check also "dependencies" aka if a system file is actually missing. There are "dependencies checking softwares". Find them. Use them.

3) Only after you did 1 & 2 conclude that it is a hardware problem - either driver &/or even the hardware itself. As a Windows 7 person you've spent a good deal on hardware already; why spend more before confirming points 1 & 2. Btw when I say this I imply in no way that you are rich enough to afford or poor enough not to afford it so don't get me wrong please.

If completely uninstalling and reinstalling windows didn't solve the problem, then we can almost rule out software issues. The only possible things I could think of would be 1: a BIOS problem, and 2: an error with the Master Boot Record, both of which are independent from Windows installations. Number 1 could be fixed with a BIOS upgrade (probably found on the Dell site). But the only way I can think of to fix 2 (if Windows repair didn't do it) is by completely wiping the entire hard drive and starting from square -1. If this doesn't work then you'll have to call Dell...
