Hey Waynos. If you have time, you can google/bing... whatever, all those drivers, devices, other terms you mentioned, to get more insight.

Maybe there are specific forums for some of these that you feel may be of concern, like say the modem, as the manufacturer may have support forums or FAQs pages--common questions about devices, & troubleshooting tips.

Or have you tried a system restore to an earlier time that was before these problems began?

Hopefully you can get this resolved soon. But...

... there is always the option of backing up/saving --copying everything you can, & go for a disk re-format, reinstall the OS & drivers--not fun, but sometimes to start over with a clean install is what the PCDoc will have to order!

Thanks karen and yourpalal . I was able to learn a lot by looking in hidden drivers , the driver is stopped but I still could not turn it back on , its parent is HTREE\ROOT and it has a long list of siblings including AVG ID, HTTP, WAN IP,PPPOE, VOLSNAP,VOL MGR etc and I saw prayaya V3 in the list which makes me wonder if its this is prayaya on a removeable drive or an old modem which has been moved .

Under DEVICE NODE STATUS it say's DN_HAS PROBLEM

                                                          DN_MOVED

                                                          DN_DISABLEABLE

Under class icon path value = %\system root%\system32\setup api.dll-19

          device class = Legacy driver

So maybe DN_DISABLEABLE means I can just ignore it ?

thanks for your help karen and yourpalal.

Those are good ideas Karen. When I looked at the Device Manager, on the right is "Actions," under "More Actions," then "View," there is an option to "Show Hidden Devices."

Also, when waynos said that "Microsoft installed the wrong update KB2416470," couldn't that update be removed as a possible help?

I would try looking in Device Manager to see if any bad drivers show up there. Just right-click on My Computer and select Manage and in the resulting window, you should see a menu item on the left for Device Manager. Just expand all the devices on the right and see if any of them have an X indicating a faulty driver.

I cant work out what the netgroup packet filter service is but system logs say's that MS has installed then stopped then installed again two updates that were not for my system, and one of them is a security update for .net framework 3.5 SP1, and my system is .net framework 4 SP2 . Problem reports and solutions say's system crashes are caused by damaged drivers ( unknown ) . What would be a good tool , easy to use for a beginner to find and repair, replace broken drivers.? I didn't like the way software informer stuck itself on the start button, but I didn't use it so I don't know how well it works either. thanks

Hi karen, thanks for the suggestions. I dont have a disc and have been trying to avoid going back to my early image. I dont suspect malware as I have several scanners on board and on sticks and run them often. The strange thing is that when I go to computer- manage -event viewer -reliability and performance , it say's it has been corrupted or not running for 24 hrs. So I go to computer - manage - tools -events-windows - system logs and the crashes do not register there , but by going back to where the first error shows I find that earlier that day, 6th of the 10th I have sixty warnings that Microsoft installed the wrong update KB2416470 security update and then not long after that unrepairable drivers at boot, so it looks like Microsoft might be my problem. I have them ask before installing updates but I never do a check on the update, a bit stupid I know but why does it have to be such a hassle, their genuine advantage should know whats on my PC. Also while Googling the several drivers that failed security audits in windows I found three good sites with libraries of file names, Checkfilenames.com, freefixer.com and runscanner.net where you can just do a search of their libraries, so I was able to find that threatfire, truecrypt and spotmau have unsigned or hidden drivers. So anyway , if I cant find a fix for whatever MS did I might have to reinstall. Maybe if I look in windows updates is that where I can uninstall updates from? thanks karen.

Definitely sounds like an error that would cause crashes in Vista I would guess that your install of Vista has become corrupt somehow (possibly a virus, but not necessarily). If you have your original install disks I would boot from them and run the "repair" option. And run a thorough virus scan.
