I can easily call the old XP back into service again, but as it is old and slow I would probably have to reinstall XP at the very least. And the space on my desktop is limited.

Getting everything to work under Linus, with driver and ScanGear installer only for (32 bit) Win, would probably be even more complicated than getting it to work in my virtual machine...

For the Win7 compatibility troubleshooter, I actually meant to try in Win 7.  As I see it, the Virtual Box route is only to make the Canon work, not a requirement otherwise?

Two more (probably useless) thoughts. 

1)  You had "recently replaced my old XP laptop".  If you still have it and it is working, use that.

2)  Could you boot from a Linux LiveCD and scan from there?.

As far as I comprehend it, the XP virtual machine functions as a standalone system. The Virtual Box in which it runs has its own way of connecting to USB peripherals, which, when selected, are then disconnected from the host Win 7 system.

I have been googling like a man possessed these last few days, but found nothing remotely useful. But I'll certainly try your link, once I get my breath back.

Drivers galore, but the 64 bits are the problem. I'll have another look for a Vista 64 driver, one never knows.

The Win7 compatibility troubleshooter didn't do me any good in the virtual machine. haven't tried the XP equivalent yet, but will do so. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Vuescan, always an excellent standby, unfortunately cannot connect to the 9900F without a Twain driver.

When I went from XP -> Win 7 (64) I had similar problems with a HP printer driver.  I was lucky and found a Vista driver that worked.  I assume you have tried for a Vista driver and also have tried Win 7's 'Program Compatiblity' troubleshooter?

When I had the problem, I did find a site that had generic drivers which might work.  I can't find that link, but I have found a site with three generic Twain drivers.  These may be too generic, as other devices like cameras also use Twain.  A full Google (or other) search might produce something more specif.  The link is: http://softwaretopic.informer.com/generic-twain-driver-for/

One final thought, do serious photo editors, word processors etc. have their own twain interfaces?

Having recently replaced my old XP laptop with a win 7/64 one, i am now unable to use my expensive Canon 9900F scanner. Canon refuses to help.No Win 7/64 drivers now or ever. Buy a new one.

I have now installed Virtual Box and am running XP in it. Works a treat, so I thought I'd try to set up the scanner in the VB XP environment as well.

Installation of the driver appeared to go well, there were no error massages. But when I attempt to attach the scanner through the Devices->USB Devices menu it doesn't work and I get nowhere. Apparently there is no useable Twain driver. An error window says:

Failed to attach the USB device Canon Scanner [0301] to the virtual machine WinXP.

USB device 'Canon Scanner' with UUID {5f4ae051-1b8e-47c6-8d65-2c70af9effd3} is busy with a previous request. Please try again later.

Obviously this is all Chinese to me. I am slowly but surely getting desperate. Is there a way to get my scanner working again, in VB XP or in any other way, or should I just take my loss and buy a new one (and not a Canon this time)?
