I am trying to install Cyanogenmod on my HTC magic. It is rooted already but I can't figure out how to put it on. I tried turning it on while holding down the home button as well as while holding the trackball. The home button brought up the system recovery screen for android. But I couldn't find a way to update the system from that. When I was holding the trackball a blue light turned on by the speaker but no screen ever turned on the screen just stays blank. I could also do it from a computer if there is a way to do that but I haven't seen a way to do it yet. Thanks for any info anyone can give me.

I don't own an HTC Magic and it seems XDA-Developers no longer has an HTC Magic subsection, so the following advice is based off my general experience with flashing CM. So be cautious. Me and dotTech are not responsible for any crap that happens to your device and data.

That said, the first thing you need to do is download CM 6.1.0 (http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/htc-magic) and place it on your SD card of your phone. Next, you need to download ROM Manager from Android Market (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager). After downloading ROM Manager, flash ClockworkMod Recovery from ROM Manager. (Your phone will reboot, etc. etc.) After you have flashed ClockworkMod Recovery, go back into ROM Manager and select “Install ROM from SD Card”. Find the CM 6.1.0 file you downloaded earlier and select that. You should be asked to backup your current ROM and clear caches/data. I highly suggest you do all three. Then click okay and let ROM Manager do its thing.

Hope that helps. Let us know how it goes.

I had already checked out that page but it just gave instructions on rooting it as far as I could tell and since mine was already rooted I didn't feel that would be helpful. But thanks for the instructions on how to do it as per your first post. I have already backed the phone up using titanium backup free so everything should be safe. I have also downloaded the cyanogenmod from the website. Next I will download ROM manager as you suggest and try what you suggest.

Glad to hear it, chinaguy. Let me know how it goes!

(BTW ROM Manager backups are more “complete” than TitaniumBackup backups. It is sort of like the image vs file backup of Windows, with ROM Manager doing image backups.)

I tried to get ROM manager from the link you gave. But unfortunately I couldn't. It said I didn't have an android phone attached to that account. Apparently that is because it is on Android 1.5. I couldn't find the app on market either. So I guess I need to find another way to update. I knew the phone was out of date, I just didn't know it was this out of date.
