Sounds like this is a business computer, may pay to get a "professinal" in to do it for you, just to be on the safe side if your not sure what your doing. If your going to do it yourself, backup everything first. Also, you dont want to uninstall IE. In theory I can't see that you would loss any data, it's just a straight forward update.

I always make SURE I know what I am doing first--that's why I kept putting this off....:-)....

I brought in a well-known, experienced professional to replace my 2KPro with XP. In the end, it took him 12 hours, and I paid by the hour! The other time I brought in a highly recommended professional, she didn't solve the problem, but rather caused additional problems which she had to come back and fix. I paid her by the hour for all that and ended up where I started......Now I do all my own fixing.....It takes me a long time (checking out posters' suggestions) and I learn a lot. But I rarely do anything complicated/dangerous without a MS KB article printout in front of me.....As I said above, I may end up just doing an update, for which I certainly don't need any help. Even on that route, most update links are for going from 7 to 8, not 6 to anything.....

1. Then I must be missing such things on other sites as well.....

     a. Will 7 get me your menus?

     b. I don't know how long 8 has been out....Is it debugged yet?

2. Since my 6 has been on the machine for so long, and 7/8 have so many advances, I thought I should do a clean install. There must be a way of exporting everything (?), but I don't have time to go synthesizing a bunch of instruction sources ( what I usually do) to make sure I am not going to lose anything. I need a lot of time to do that safely. I usually work from MS Knowledge Base articles only, which are very exact, very detailed, and don't leave out any steps (they don't assume you know anything)--but did not find one for this particular activity. I don't like to rely on random forum posters (I don't mean specifically Dottech!), because well-meaning posters out to help, don't always give correct/adequate info. I thought you might be able to reccommend a reliable site (that you know and trust) that deals specifically with IE/OE.

3. Actually, now that I think of it, my concern was not so much with IE, but rather the fact that OE was a component of  IE, and thus removal of IE (for a clean install) meant removing OE with it. That's what I don't want to play around with.....Maybe I'll just do an update after all....To 7 or 8? I hope the size hasn't tripled...(another reason I don't upgrade some programs until I get a new system)...

I am not interested in IE8 until all the bugs are fixed (has that point been reached yet?). Also, it may be too big for my little system(?). I have a small, old system, and upgrades of older programs are often prohibitive in size nowadays.

Until I find out a sure-fire way to upgrade to 7 without loosing any data, I will stick with my old IE6. .
