@ Locutus: Yep, this was my experience. I also did a clean install for my sister-in-law last week from Vista to Win 7 (different versions) and the same thing happened. All the files were in the windows.old folder. So personally, I don't think it makes a difference.

Even if you have to do a reinstall, all your files are kept in Windows.old... at least they are for me. The filesystem is just like you'd expect: Current documents, etc are in C:\Users\UserName, Windows files are in C:\Windows, and here's the great part: I did a 'clean' upgrade, where it deletes all your files... or so I thought. The old documents are in C:\Windows.old\Users\ and apparently it also kept C:\Windows.old\Windows too.

Yes, in order to do an "in-place" upgrade, I think you have to be going to the same version of Win7 like pwana mentioned above. Otherwise, you need to do a re-install.

Which version of vista are you using? Cuz I heard W7 doesn't support upgrading from a lower version to a higher one (like from Vista Home Premium to 7 Ultimate). And also unfortunately, O&O's migration kit , which would be perfect for this, has been free up until just recently (now $40).

If you have Home Premium or lower then if you have a friend or know someone who installed W7 HP, you could do the upgrade with that (but not input a license key). Then after you have successfully migrated everything, use your disc and key to upgrade to Ultimate.

It shouldn't be a hassle. I upgraded at the end of last year from Vista to Win 7. No problems at all. In fact, it was the easiest (and fastest) OS transfer I had ever done. The good thing is that all your files are kept in a windows.old folder, meaning no having to copy over copious amounts of material. You just have to reinstall the programs you want. Go for it, I say. I doubt you'll regret it.

At the moment I'm running vista and I have the opportunity to upgrade to windows 7 ultimate and get office 2010 both for a low price. But I've never thought of upgrading my OS up untill now. I'm wondering how big of a hassle it is to upgrade. I did a complete reinstallation not three months ago and I'm not really looking forward to doing it again. So I'm hoping someone who already upgraded from vista reads this. Is the upgrade from vista to windows 7 smooth? Or should I start searching for all my drivers and installers?
