Were you ever able to get the record what you hear working locutus? I would guess if you don't have a stereo mix option that you probably can't but wanted to check anyway. I am sure you could if you replaced your sound card as long as it has a stereo mix recorder, though I am sure that is not the solution you want to hear.

Yeah.  The webcam problem was a driver issue, so it was solved by installing the Acer driver over the Microsoft driver.  To record what I hear I can just use an audio splitter in the audio-out headphones port and connect one split to speakers and the other back to my laptop.

Yup.  Now to just conquer the "what-you-hear" aspect of audio recording.

Did you try the solution that freewareelite suggested: http://www.nch.com.au/soundtap.....index.html? It could be that would work. After a cursory glance it looks like it might though from the description on the website I was not sure if it would or not.

Ya know this quest for "recording devices" reminded me-my microphone hasn't worked since I reinstalled 7 over Vista.  It worked in the RC, so I'm going to try the official driver.

Btw, Wheezer, thank you for the treats. As an American living in China they are very welcome. Even if I can't really eat them.

Now if only I could get it to work on mine :P

I followed Chinaguy's instructions by right clicking in the empty space under the microphone, clicked the option to show hidden items, and "Stereo Mix" showed up. Enabled it, found some music on the internet, started Audacity and recorded a few seconds.

When I clicked the play button to see if it had recorded, I had crystal clear sound.

Here's a couple treats, as a thank you.

As stated above, I use Home Premium.  When I disabled Line In, it disappeared from the list.  When I right clicked and viewed the disabled ones, it appeared as disabled.  I reenabled it.

@Wheezer: So you definitely should have the option to show the disabled devices. Locutus has the same version of Windows 7 and he has the option as well. If when you try showing those disabled devices it shows a device that says something like stereo mixer (that is what it showed as on mine, yours may have a totally different name for it) try enabling it, then setting it as the default recording device, then try recording some sound that you want to record that just plays back on your computer and see if the sound is clear as it should be. Then tell us if this works, or if you do not have any other devices listed there even after showing the ones that are disabled.

For me, the microphone jack isn't listed until I plug in a microphone, then I can enable or disable that method of recording. Until then it is not even listed in the list of devices.

Btw, I am using one of those netbooks so I do not think my sound card is that advanced but it still has this option so it is quite possible yours will have it. Of course it is an Asus netbook if that makes any difference. Just hope this wil work for you Wheezer. Then you wouldn't need anything except the Windows sound recorder or Audacity, but it would be annoying to change your recording device if you would use it for other things often. Thankfully in Win 7 you can choose to have a different default device for communications and recording.
