I don't think you have enough memory to run XP very well.

And the max your machine will hold is 512MB at that.

Seriously consider a new computer with at least 2GB of memory, 4GB is better.

This is not what you wanted to hear from anybody but sometimes the OS just demands too much of the amount of RAM we can afford.

It just happens...nothing you have done wrong or can fix on this old machine IMHO.

Hello Ashraf,

I posted the specs on my machine as you requested. It's been a couple of days and no response. Do you have any thoughts regarding my problem, or should I "move on" to another source of help?

I enjoy your informative GAOTD reviews. They have been very helpful in deciding whether to download or not. Case in point: Today I was considering whether to try Wondershare Audio Converter, however I already have Format Factory — so it was a "no go".

Thanks again for your good work. Have a blessed day.

Lee

Hello Jean-Luc Picard: Thank you for your advice. Following your direction, I was able to access the start up tab, via MSCONFIG, and was able to stop all programs from loading at start up, however I am still faced with my main issue (windows explorer keeps crashing). Any insight or advice on how to fix this? Thanks for any help offered. ---- Lee

This one's simple!

Let explorer crash. Then open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc or Ctrl+Alt+Del). From there, click "New Task..." at the bottom. After that type in Msconfig. it works w/o explorer being open.

I picked up an old HP desktop with WinXP installed at a thrift store for my wife to replace her even older desktop with WinME installed. (She just uses it to access the internet). Here is the problem: Every time windows loads, within a few seconds "windows explorer" crashes. Even when I start in safe mode, it still crashes within a few seconds. My first goal is to access the start up tab, via msconfig. There seem to be dozens of programs trying to start and I would like to disable all but the essentials. My thinking is, perhaps if I can disable all these programs from starting, that may create enough stability, to at least be able to start looking for spyware, viruses, etc. Any advice on how I can keep windows explorer from crashing? By the way, it did not come with a winxp disk, start up disk, recovery disk, etc. I believe it came with an actual xp disc initially, because the Microsoft sticker on the side does not have OEM at the begining of the number. If any possible solutions come to mind, I would appreciate any help offered.
