Are you sure there was actually an option to disable it in the Custom install mode when you installed avast! 6? Because I always use Custom for ANY install I do that gives the option; and when installing Avast 6, I never saw an option for "avast! Gadget" in the list – it just seemed to be included anyway. Maybe I just missed something, or maybe the option wasn't as clearly named as I'd hoped.

maybe its something new so you thought it was "part of it?"

but yeah here it is!

you could also do this:

right-click the desktop, select Gadgets, right-click the avast! gadget and select Uninstall.

but i believe that this will not make it "permanent. some users are reporting that it comes back on boot up [which is weird]

That's my experience as well. It came back on the next boot after an Uninstall from the Gadget Manager for me too.

Trying out your advice now though. Thanks for the help!

Edit because these Forums totally screwed up the layout of this post for some reason. BTW, I think I may have found the problem that causes the "small text after a quote" - seems the forums don't put the first line after a horizontal rule in paragraph tags (< p> < /p>), which is how all the content is supposed to be...

Avast 6 is nowhere near as drastic a change from Avast 5, as Avast 5 was from Avast 4; with only one change to the main GUI and no changes to the looks or most of the functionality at all.
Just one annoyance for me though – anyone know how to turn off the Vista/Win7 Desktop Gadget showing you Avast's status?

"The new feature will be available at no cost to all avast! users –

including those with avast! Free Antivirus, Pro Antivirus, and the

premium Internet Security suite."

Some of the features

AutoSandbox – suspicious programs will be optionally run sandboxed

avast! WebRep – browser plugin for website reputation rating; a combination of data from our virus lab and community voting

Script Shield now even in the Free AV

Site Blocking now even in the Free AV

SafeZone – a special virtualized area for sensitive transactions (e.g. secure online banking) (paid products only)

Restore factory settings command (Settings -> Troubleshooting)

Automatic actions in the boot-time scan

New compression method in the installer makes the setup packages about 20% smaller.

Script Shield now functional even with IE8/IE9 Protected Mode

Sidebar gadget

Improved stability/compatibility of the Behavior Shield

Improvements in the avast! sandbox

I especially like the idea of suspicious programs will be optionally run sandboxed which will enable people to create a ‘virtual’ computer inside their physical

machine. If they encounter malware while browsing the internet or

running an infected application, the virtual computer will shut down,

leaving their real computer unharmed and running.

AutoSandbox identifies and prompts users to run suspicious applications

in a safe virtual environment. Users have three options: execute the

file within the virtual AutoSandbox, run it outside the sandbox, or

cancel running the application entirely.

Let me know what you think. I hope this is a "keeper".
