Are you sure there was actually an option to disable it in the Custom install mode when you installed avast! 6? Because I always use Custom for ANY install I do that gives the option; and when installing Avast 6, I never saw an option for "avast! Gadget" in the list – it just seemed to be included anyway. Maybe I just missed something, or maybe the option wasn't as clearly named as I'd hoped.

right-click the desktop, select Gadgets, right-click the avast! gadget and select Uninstall.

but i believe that this will not make it "permanent. some users are reporting that it comes back on boot up [which is weird]

That's my experience as well. It came back on the next boot after an Uninstall from the Gadget Manager for me too.

Edit because these Forums totally screwed up the layout of this post for some reason. BTW, I think I may have found the problem that causes the "small text after a quote" - seems the forums don't put the first line after a horizontal rule in paragraph tags (< p> < /p>), which is how all the content is supposed to be...

Avast 6 is nowhere near as drastic a change from Avast 5, as Avast 5 was from Avast 4; with only one change to the main GUI and no changes to the looks or most of the functionality at all. However, it has tons more features, each of which make this one essential update.

Just one annoyance for me though – anyone know how to turn off the Vista/Win7 Desktop Gadget showing you Avast's status? It's a new part of Avast 6 and seems to be included by default; and it just comes back each time you log in again even if you close it, with no apparent option anywhere to switch it off completely.
