according to Ashraf's (& MikeR's)suggestions, i am gonna try iWisoft Video Converter. never tried super/any video converter before either. i have format factory, it is excellent, only problem is it does not do DVD (VIDEO_TS) to MKV (x.264 coded). for this purpose, i like handbrake (mac version available as well), or ripbot.

@OldElmerFudd:

Amnesia overwhelms. . . again (though I can't remember the last time that happened.)

Thanks for the reminder about MediaCoder because yes, it's also on this PC and yes, I do use it as an alternative to SUPER according to whim.

It's easier to get to grips with than SUPER; a darn sight easier to locate and download; and it does just as good / precise a job (and, perhaps, even better.)

Apologies for the omission!

@MikeR:

I agree with the statements in your post, especially the reference to Super's website (vbg). Another freeware I've found useful is MediaCoder http://www.mediacoderhq.com/
Supports 32/64-bit versions Windows XP, Vista, 7.
Downloadable as device-specific stand alone modules as well.

Sad to say, commercial software of this nature really does remind me how old I'm getting.

Before the age of the Internet, if I wanted to map out a motoring itinerary it was necessary to pay one or other of the UK's motoring organisations for such a document.

Then the Internet comes along. And that's it: the era of the paid-for route planner is dead. You can get whatever you want online, free of charge.

Today's GOTD is in the same category: commercial software in search of buyers who can as easily acquire the same kind of app for nothing.

No point in me even bothering to DL this from GOTD; I have all three of the apps Ashraf mentioned sitting happily on my computer and experience has shown the following:

1. Video conversion / video editing: iWiSoft. Fast, stable, dependable. Excellent output.

2. Audio conversion: FormatFactory. Faster than iWisoft. (Yes, FF's video work is good but not quite up to the standard maintained by iWisoft's app.)

3. SUPER. Well yes, for every person who would like to use it, several thousand don't even get past SUPER's hopeless website. And even when successfully downloaded, it's nothing like as user-friendly as FF and iWisoft. But, but. . .

For special tasks, where you're seeking maximum control and fine-tuning of any and all parameters, there's nothing to beat it.

It used to be the case that a user needed to be highly selective in what software to deploy because of the parsimonious amount of free space on the hard drive. Nowadays, that no longer applies: it's possible to mix and match many apps and still have 100s of GB spare.

Clone2Go isn't, therefore, simply a commercial app up against a rival freeware app competitor. It's up against a range of freeware apps all of which can be within a single user's armory. If it's still around even six months from now, I'd be surprised.

NB: very thoughtful of Ashraf, as usual, to flag up the swf issue, because time and again I come across folks who can't understand why their freeware can't handle this.

Prices for this type of app are beginning to drop though -- down from over $100 not too long ago to around $80 now. And, by coincidence, I see iWisoft is currently having a price war with its main rival, Sothink, and has just dropped its app from $79 to $49.

I still can't justify the expense but those who do work with swf may think $49's a bargain.

A nice review Ashraf, and very nice to see you back. I've tried several times in the past year to get hold of Super but each time found it impossible to download off the developer's site. Wonder if he's done anything to improve matters. Might take a gander over there right now and find out ........ I'm back....... and found out that it's now available at softpedia -
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Encoders-Converter-DIVX-Related/SUPER.shtml

But reviews are mixed and do give pause for thought. One reviewer says it's a front end for a number of other utilities and can overwrite newer apps you've installed with older ones. and mess with codecs you've installed. Maybe the dev has since fixed this problem.

As alternative, there is also Oxelon Video Converter : http://www.oxelon.com/media_converter.html
I especially like the ability to start conversion by right clicking and the fact that the program indicates the weight of the conversion.
By cons, it can convert to WMV.
