[Web] Use The Long Tail to play the least popular songs on Spotify

The Long Tail for WebNot every song from a particular artist becomes super popular. In most cases, there are underrated songs that don’t even get to have their own spots on radio stations and music charts. Fortunately, you can use a free web app called “The Long Tail” to easily find your favorite artist’s least popular tracks on Spotify.

What is it and what does it do

Main Functionality

The Long Tail is a free web app that is designed to search and play the least popular songs or tracks on Spotify. It’s a simple web app with a simplistic user interface. You just type the name of the artist that you want and the web app will do the rest of the work. It will then show you a playlist that contains the least popular tracks from your favorite artists/musicians.

Pros

  • Simple, easy to use – no user log-in or registration required (except when you log-in to play the songs on Spotify)
  • Neat and simplistic UI
  • Quickly searches for the least popular songs or tracks by your favorite artists and singers
  • Plays the songs (playlists) via Spotify’s web player

Cons

  • None that I can think of but it would be nice if the web app can add an option for advanced search (ex. search songs by album name, year, etc.)

Discussion

The Long Tail Free Spotify AppIn one of my reviews, I’ve covered Every Noise at Once – a free Spotify app for listening to music of every genre. This time, I’m going to review another Spotify app. It’s called “The Long Tail” and it is intended to help you search, play and listen to the least popular songs or tracks by your favorite artists and musicians.

All in all, The Long Tail is a pretty simple, neat and straightforward app. It flaunts a simplistic user interface with only a few options. All you need to do is to go to its homepage (see link below), enter the name of your favorite artist on the text field and then click the “Play” button.

After which, The Long Tail will immediately search the Spotify database and it will only take a while before it can automatically generate a playlist that contains all of your favorite artist’s least popular songs or tracks. If you click on any of the songs, the web app will automatically play them using Spotify’s default web player. You can even manage the playlist just like the way that you usually do when you are listening to your favorite Spotify tracks. You can add the least popular songs to your custom playlist or share the song online via Facebook, etc. The choice is yours. It’s that simple. If you wish to listen to another artist, just type the name on the web app’s text field and once again, click the “Play” button.

Anyways, it also appears that the web app ranks the songs or tracks according to the number of times that they were played on the music streaming site. The song that gained the least number of plays will be shown on top of the playlist and so on. Of course, you can play any of the songs listed on the playlist in no particular order.

As a wrap up, I can say that the The Long Tail is a very useful Spotify app. It can help you find the songs from your favorite artists, particularly those that you rarely listen to as well as those that you haven’t even heard of. It’s a good way to know more about your favorite artists since not all of their songs can be featured on popular playlists and music videos.

I also don’t have any serious issues with this app. It pretty much does what it is intended to do. I haven’t even encountered any annoying glitches or bugs. It’s just that it could’ve been much better if there were advanced options for song search. Like, for example, you can narrow down your search by providing a specific date or time. It would also be nice if users can search for the least popular tracks by album.

Conclusion and download link

I like using The Long Tail mainly because it’s simple and practical. It lets you discover the songs that you rarely listen to. It also offers a good way for you to get to know more of your favorite artist or singer. So whether or not you’re using Spotify’s free music streaming service, feel free to give this web app a try.
