About Windows Software of the Day

Windows has hundreds of thousands of programs. Because of this great volume and lack of a central store, software discovery (aka finding new and useful programs) is extremely difficult. With our Windows Software of the Day [6] initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three programs, allowing our readers to discover new software, daily. Enjoy! [Subscribe to our Windows section to never miss an article: RSS Feed [4] | E-mail [5]]

App Switcher for Windows 7 Aero

[9]Want a zero-config, simple as can be app switcher for Windows? App Switcher is just that: it shows very large previews of your open windows, and has no configuration.

To open it, you just double tap the top row of your screen. This can seem a bit difficult at first; it’s definitely much easier if you use a computer mouse instead of a laptop trackpad. However, once you get the hang of it, it can be quite nice.

If you’ve been looking for something to speed up your workflow and don’t want to spend time fritzing around with the settings, App Switcher for Windows 7 Aero is the switcher for you: fast, painless setup, and easy to use.

OpenWith Enhanced

[12]Trying to use Windows’ built-in Open With… dialog is annoying most if not all of the time. It only shows up when you don’t have compatible applications installed, and it only ever shows applications that you do have installed. This can be an issue.

OpenWith Enhanced is a nice free application that lets you fix this issue. It has a database of file extensions and programs that can open them. For instance, if you try to open a Photoshop file without having Photoshop installed, it’ll recommend things like IrfanView and other photo viewers.

Once you choose a program to install, it’ll also lead you to the developer’s site, letting you install it right then and there. If you’re on the hunt for software to open a particular file extension, you can install OpenWith Enhanced to be prompted whenever you need to open it.

[15]SimpleClock is a very aptly-named thing: it’s a simple text-based screensaver that shows you the time. In fact, it’s so simple, there’s barely anything to write about. It gives you the current date, the day, and the time in AM or PM.

SimpleClock is written in ActionScript, which means that you have to have Adobe Flash installed. Other than that, however, there are no real requirements for having SimpleClock and its minimal beauty.
