Valve hates Windows 8 , Blizzard Entertainment isn’t very enthusiastic about Windows 8 , and a user interface expert feels Windows 8 is a “cognitive burden” on people . Who else is a Windows 8 naysayer ? How about the developer of Minecraft.
Minecraft is a popular game for PCs. Markus “Notch” Persson, the developer of Minecraft, recently tweeted that he was contacted by Microsoft to certify Minecraft for Windows 8, so it can be included in Windows Store:
Got an email from microsoft, wanting to help “certify” minecraft for win 8. I told them to stop trying to ruin the pc as an open platform.
Persson followed up that tweet by declaring he will never allow Microsoft to certify Minecraft:
I’d rather have minecraft not run on win 8 at all than to play along. Maybe we can convince a few people not to switch to win 8 that way..
What exactly is Persson’s beef with Windows 8 ? Persson, who has no problem with Microsoft in general, hasn’t provided explicit details but does say he isn’t very happy with how Microsoft is making Windows 8 a “closed system” — how Microsoft is trying to funnel software and programs through Windows Store as opposed to the decentralized distribution we have all come to be familiar with.
Of course not certifying Minecraft for Windows 8 does not mean the game won’t work on Windows 8; it probably will work on Windows 8 and Persson will likely issue updates to Minecraft to fix anything that Windows 8 breaks. What this does mean, however, is Minecraft will not be available in Windows Store which could potentially be a financial loss for Persson. Let’s see how he reacts if his sales fall through.
