Sony’s 4K movie service will work with PS4, but movie downloads will be 100GB each

Watching movies at 4K (3,840 x 2,160) resolution? Sounds great, doesn’t it? Too bad it’s gonna take quite awhile for most of us to download any movie if Sony COO, Peter Molyneux, is on-point about file size — 100GB each. Yikes.

Sony’s 4K movie service hasn’t launched yet, and we’re actually all still waiting to see how they’ll accomplish such a gargantuan feat. But in a recent interview by The Verge, Molyneux did pretty much confirm that the service will work with their recently announced next-generation PlayStation.

So if you’ve got your 4K TV ready and your PlayStation 4 after this holiday season, you’re still going to have to deal with those huge download times. Around 100GB for each movie might not be too bad for people with really high speeds and are will waiting to wait for some double HD action, but what about the users with data caps?

There are still a lot of questions about how this will actually be feasible, but as Internet infrastructure around the world improves, maybe by the time 4K becomes a standard, 100GB shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Besides, if you’ve got a 4K TV this early, you can probably handle 100GB. Right?
