HBO shows will now be available to international viewers one week after US broadcast, instead of months

In a move that international audiences will definitely approve of, HBO is going to make their original TV content available internationally one week after it airs in the US. This change was mentioned when referencing Game of Thrones, which is set to premiere at the end of this month. Previously, viewers outside of the US would have to wait weeks or even months after the original airing before they could see it.

Well, not everyone, because a lot of people decided to just pirate the heck out of Game of Thrones, making it the most pirated TV show of 2012 (hit up the link for the others on the list). Despite that, this change was made possible reportedly due to technical infrastructure that the company has been available to develop, and is supposedly not a response to how badly some of their shows are being pirated. According to The Verge, sources have declined to specify what HBO changed in its technical infrastructure to achieve this.

Their biggest hit is the most pirated TV show of last year. That’s the technical infrastructure they’re talking about. Either way, it’s a win for everyone who doesn’t live in the US and March 31 can’t come soon enough!
